The Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems, headed by Prof. Dr Dirk Uwe Sauer, is part of the Institute for Power Electronics and Electric Drives (ISEA) within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at RWTH Aachen University. We are the largest university research group in Germany dedicated to the fundamentals of battery technology and its system integration into applications.
Our publications provide a good overview of the topics we focus on: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Dirk-Uwe-Sauer
Our aim is to enable and improve the mechanical characterisation and monitoring of batteries across a broad spectrum. We achieve this by measuring batteries of all relevant technologies as accurately as possible using innovative ultrasonic measuring devices. To this end, we build our own measuring devices and test benches, evaluate the data and develop models based on it.
With the “Centre for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems” (CARL), your working environment is currently taking shape on the Melaten campus as a state-of-the-art research facility. From mid-2022, this centre will link method-oriented, interdisciplinary cutting-edge research from the material level to the energy system level.
What we offer:
Would you like to work in an academic environment whilst also collaborating with industrial companies? Do you enjoy tackling engineering problems from both a theoretical and practical perspective and seeking solutions independently? Are you interested in pursuing a PhD in the field of battery systems?
Excellent command of written and spoken German and English
You are actively involved in projects focused on the investigation of battery cells and systems, both at the test centre and in practical applications. Ultrasonic measurements and their further development are always at the forefront of this work.
Within the context of CARL, there is a particular focus on integrating data from different measurement methods.
