      Vorstellungsgespräch

Disclaimer: This is not a post-rejection rant. I have had other rejections in the past and completely found those processes and the decisions fair. This is just to help others better prepare what to expect and not just go by the brand value Google has. Had a phone screen where the interviewer knew his stuff and asked the right questions to judge the candidate. It was 45 minutes long and the conversation ranged from prior experiences and how I would handle hypothetical situations. I was then invited onsite to an interview that had four rounds. I was told by the recruiter beforehand what each round would be about. The first two were PM basics and behavioral questions based on hypothetical scenarios, or at least that's what they were supposed to be. Instead, one interviewer kept stonewalling me with absolutely no reaction to whatever I said and absolutely no interest in my thought process and examples. Just run of the mill questions being read out of his laptop and he was expecting specific answers to questions like "Name three principles of X" and "What are the two constraints of Y?" The worst part was there was a specific correct answer to all his questions which he was expecting. The interview process also started off poorly with the first interviewer not arriving on time and another person located in another campus having to dial in via a video link who seemed a little disinterested to take the interview. Then there was an opportunity to have lunch and talk to a TPM, this guy was amazing. Then I started to get a real feel of Google and almost made me forget the previous mishap. There was a coding round with a software engineer with some standard questions. He was understanding and knowledgeable and we walked through the code I wrote on the whiteboard. Finally, there was a system design question with a senior Googler. I really enjoyed this conversation. This made a lot of sense and required a lot of thinking and the interviewer was pure class. Overall, the last two interviews were not enough for me to salvage any points as it seems since I got rejected. Also, they weren't enough for me to call it a positive experience. If people are not interested to be part of the interview panel, they should not be. Simple. It is a pity that a company like Google resorts to such mediocre line of questioning. Don't be too disappointed if you don't make the cut. They had me sign an NDA and hence I cannot delve into specific questions. Word of advice: The role is for a university grad. If this is your only PM related interview and all your other interviews are for far more technical roles, I'd advice not to spend too much time preparing for this. If only the interviewers were half as decent and nice as the recruiters.
