    Pros

    In my opinion, it has definitely improved over the past year. I am happy with the new executive management as well as improved management at other levels of the organisation. I also feel that the strategy is more clear and focused now. I have found the company to be flexible with regards to working conditions as well.

    Kontras

    Most of the downsides could be facing other oil and gas companies at the moment with the challenges facing the industry. It can be difficult to get approval for projects (though not impossible if there is a good business case).

    Good pay and vacation - comparable or better to other companies in town

    Kontras

    Constant changing direction of business unit made it difficult to progress. Capital budget reductions over the years (understandable) made the workplace stale with less development opportunities.

    Pros

    1. Lots of front line employees are brilliant to work with
    2. Salary and benefit still good for those remaining
    3. Upper management started to turn the ship slightly around

    Kontras

    1. Lots of people don't understand hedging, still think the company performed poorly due to hedging and would be a cash machine once financial hedging was gone. Therefore no action is taken when WTI was in the 70s range.
    2. No blunt communications and always a rosy picture from HR. It would be so much better to speak the truth about the move to Brookfield was primarily for cost control than a collaborative work environment. Therefore tons of questions were followed such as "how do you handle moving people from offices to cubicles".

    Rat an das Management

    1. Take a look at the company profile, understand its volatility and source, and plan hedging accordingly. Use hedging loss as an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to avoid a powerful tool.
    2. Give HR a green light to be more honest. People can handle truth. It is not like grass is greener somewhere else in Calgary anyway.

    Pros

    The people are Cenovus's strongest asset. Generally they are willing to work hard and strive to restore the company to its former glory. The company also offers comprehensive benefit packages and good salaries.

    Kontras

    The management needs to address some serious moral issues. They also tend to work their best employees very hard but offer little in compensation increases to match increasing workload.

    Listen to the people! I worked at Cenovus for 6 years before making the decision to leave. I did notice some change for the better as I was nearing my departure, but there is a lot of work to to still. Generally people are happy to pick up the slack and work hard, but you have to reward that behaviour. These rewards don't have to be monetary - I recommended to my management that they increase free or low cost team exercises (beers after work, fun activities for an afternoon...) in an effort to build moral and reward hard work.

    Also, and this is important, the CLT needs to start becoming more personable. Get out and meet your employees, see the work they are doing and listen to their concerns. Do this on a small group basis (quarterly town halls don't cut it). If the people feel like they are genuinely an important part of the company, they will be more motivated to work harder and more efficiently.

    Toxic culture of fear and distrust: back stabbing, lying, deception, passive aggressive management, highly reactive, full of nepotism, no support, undermine others to get ahead, rude and abusive behaviours (condescending, demeaning, belittling) by leadership is tolerated.

    Pros

    HR has been posting on this website to improve the overall ratings under the direction of the CEO. This started when the company won the glass door award for one of the top ten worst company to work for in North America. Good company but this activity concerns me.

    Kontras

    I work within the HR team and HR leadership has been asked to ensure there are ‘balanced’ reviews on this site per direction from the CEO. I am aware of two people in HR who are required to post on the site every few weeks. It’s not right and unethical so I’m am taking the risk to disclose this is happening.

    Be fair and truthful. Address the real employee concerns and give back some benefits and posting on this website will get better.
