Cotman House Care Home has unleashed a heartwarming initiative that has residents and the local community wagging their tails with delight. Introducing "Paws for a Coffee," a unique dog walkers café that fosters a “paw-sitive” atmosphere for residents and dog enthusiasts alike. Every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 noon, the café at Cotman House Care Home transforms into a haven for dog lovers, as "Paws for a Coffee" welcomes locals and their furry companions. The aroma of fresh coffee mingles with the playful energy of dogs, creating a vibrant and inclusive gathering spot. Why Paws For Coffee The idea behind the café is to provide a space where residents, many of whom have a fondness for dogs, can enjoy the company of friendly pets and share stories of their own beloved animals. The free coffee is a thoughtful touch to encourage community members to drop by and connect over a shared love for canine companions. Cotman House Care Home Manager, Kirsty Allen, expressed her excitement about the positive impact of the initiative. "The joy on our residents' faces when they interact with the dogs is truly heartening. When local holistic and beauty therapist, Abigail, suggested a visit to Parris Lawn Care Home with the offer of some complimentary pampering, it was a definite ‘yes please’ on the residents’ behalf! A Tranquil Atmosphere and a Sense of Security Abigail Holistic & Beauty Therapy is focused on wellbeing and this was evident when Abigail arrived. In no time at all, an atmosphere of calm and tranquility settled over Parris Lawn – the perfect antidote to a wet and windy day in Lewes. Residents were happy to sit back and soak up the peaceful vibe as they enjoyed hand massages, head massages and over-clothes light touch therapy – treatments chosen especially for relaxation and stress relief with minimum intrusion. Beryl, one of the residents, told us: “I am so relaxed, and my arms feel so free. I could fall asleep right now and that’s unusual for me!”. There was a feeling of safety and security during the sessions, which Abigail tailored to suit the individual needs of the residents, and positive feedback all round. Resident Shirley said: “I feel like my imagination is playing tricks with me. I can move my thumb and usually my hands are so tight!”. When the date for National Apprenticeship Week appeared on the calendar, Home Manager Sam Booty, thought it would be a great topic to spark conversation at Blenheim Court’s weekly Breakfast Club get-together, where managers and residents catch up with croissants, cappuccinos, and plenty of chat! Why apprenticeships are important for young people and the care industry Joined by Head Chef, Nathan and Deputy Manager, Kelly, Sam began by telling the group why she feels it’s so important to support apprenticeship schemes – essentially, as an opportunity to introduce a positive attitude towards the health and social sector to those starting out in the world of work - just as she did 24 years’ ago. Sam joined one of Caring Homes Group’s sister homes while she was still at school, working part time as a kitchen assistant. She explains: “I’d always wanted to work in care, so this was a chance to get into the industry, but my career only progressed because I had great mentors and training opportunities. The company offered me a choice of career path – nursing or management – and I chose the management path, which I followed through a series of workplace apprenticeships”. Residents at The Manor Care Home love to be entertained, so a visit from 19 talented dancers from Sarah Anne Ballingall’s Zayna Dance Academy on Sunday 21st January was a real treat. The group performed a range of beautifully presented solo and ensemble dances which showcased their impressive skills and a genuine joy for dance - evident in even the tiniest performers! Dance Group Entertains at Our Care Home in Edinburgh Our residents were hugely impressed by the academy dancers’ ability and professionalism, which the school’s principal, Sarah Anne Ballingall, confirmed was the result of hard work and meticulous rehearsal. These young dancers regularly take part in competitions so being under the spotlight comes naturally, although the chance to shine in a non-competitive setting is good experience too. “Our dancers love performing, so it was really fun for them to just enjoy themselves and show off their talents”, Sarah explained. The dancers' confidence was impressive throughout the show and the residents especially loved the stunning costumes, which added a dash of ‘showbiz’ glamour! After the show, as a token of appreciation, each child was presented with a small gift from some of the residents – a thoughtful touch and a heartwarming gesture at the end of a thoroughly enjoyable event. Hillside Care Home has introduced Baby Emily, a charming therapy doll, into our community. Much more than just a doll, Emily provides a comforting sense of security, akin to holding a cherished stuffed animal. For those grappling with anxiety or difficulty in social situations, Emily offers a source of companionship and solace. Recognising the immense value of having Baby Emily, our wellbeing team took the initiative to bring her into the lives of the residents. The anticipation and excitement was palpable as Kate and Jemma, Hillside Care Home's team members, personally introduced Emily to each resident. The love and joy were evident from the moment residents laid eyes on her, and the reactions were memorable for all present. Popular resident, Joyce, was grateful for the chance to spend time with baby Emily and told Kate: "Baby Emily makes me smile all day." Connections Created At Hillside Care Home Residents in our Suffolk care home have formed a deep connection with Emily, showering her with kisses, gently rocking her, and even serenading her with lullabies. Some team members have crafted baby slings to carry her around as per the residents' requests. Baby Emily comes equipped with a box of essentials including feeding items, clothes and diapers. In the lounge, she has a cosy Moses basket where residents enjoy wrapping her in soft blankets and singing her to sleep.
