    Pros

I had a fantastic time at i2i, I was given all the support that I needed when starting out but was quickly allowed to take control of my own work. Everyone was lovely and supportive regardless of which event they worked on. This carried through to the social aspects where HR and the social committee were very active and encouraged socialising throughout the whole company.

    Kontras

The only downside to this internship is the low pay. Whilst it is good that it is paid at all it is barely a livable wage in London so you may need some of your own money saved to support you during these three months. However, the low pay should not put you off of applying here as the company makes up for it in many other ways.

    Pros

It is a good company to start off your career and learn new things. Colleagues are really friendly and the pressure of working there is not really hard.

    Kontras

I wouldn't work there more than 2 years after finishing your studies. There is no promotion among employees.

    Rat an das Management

Promote more employees rather than hiring.

Ich arbeite bei i2i Events (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Very good offices, despite the poor location. The company takes employee engagement seriously and offers a grown-up but fun environment. The products are all very high quality and people are generally passionate about their work. The company believes itself to be fast paced, but that is really an illusion created by the dizzying cadence of corporate change that happens in and around the people doing the work. I put that as a pro because the constant change provides opportunities for career progression that are otherwise not an inherent feature of the business.

    Kontras

The brands are very strong, but with that come expectations that leave no margin for error. PDs through to sales execs are annually handed relentless budgets that preclude anything other than all hands on deck, full ahead charge at selling exhibition space/driving footfall. Whilst this has driven what is now a very slickly aligned sales and marketing process, it has come at a cost.

Talented people are left wondering how many more event cycles of doing exactly the same thing but with a higher target they can muster enthusiasm for. Meanwhile, a lack of creativity or innovation around product offering has led to a uniformly transactional level of customer engagement and so a conspicuous lack of non-exhibition based revenue across most events.

    Rat an das Management

The relentless focus on driving exhibition revenues in recent years has led to a battery hen style sales & marketing operation, consequently all of our eggs have ended up in one basket. Give the brands some room for maneuver when setting budgets, some head room for innovation and creativity. If there's no room for error, nobody will try anything new and stagnation will set in. If there is some appetite for new thinking and new ideas, we can focus on opening up space for deeper and more meaningful client relationships and partnership opportunities. This reengages sales and marketing to diversify revenues and set a new agenda for how our brands can evolve with the market.

    Pros

i2i is a professional, fair, and enjoyable place to work, the people are at the top of their game and the products are of good quality.
The company takes employee engagement seriously and looks to support progression and innovation.
Thinking outside the box is encouraged and sharing expertise is valued.
The company understands the need for adaptation and invests in research to inform product and business changes.
Honest analysis of the products is constant and effective.
Team management is supportive and understanding with advice and mentoring always available
A good number of women in senior leadership roles provides a balanced working environment.

    Kontras

The workload on most people is too high to allow for much creativity or long term thinking.
Budget cuts on important events mean it is not possible to deliver an experience to visitors which rivals more innovative competitors
Morale onsite is low, in part because marketing are treated differently to sales with the former staying in much cheaper accommodation
There lots of vacancies at the moment with the majority coming about in large part due to workload not allowing for individual/personal excellence - causes frustration in the caliber of people i2i recruits
The company becoming a PLC has not yet had a discernible positive impact on employees

    Rat an das Management

Review the headcount - if the target is increasing in a shrinking sector, you'll need more people to deliver success.
Sort out the onsite hotel situation urgently.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei i2i Events (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

A great office environment, open plan with a 'Google' feel to it.
The people socially are fantastic and are looked after when it comes to organised events and activities with a genuine work hard play hard approach.
All events appear to be the biggest/leading/most successful in their own industries.

    Kontras

From the outside, looks great...the events seem to do well but there appear to be only a few real passionate 'events' people in the business. The rest are made up of interns and very young possibly out of their depth kids. Most of these are in the marketing team.
Aside from my Brand Manager I'm not entirely sure who works on or cares about my brand due to 'matrix?' set up. I've been at other events companies and this is not an organised approach and very confusing for everyone.
Overall it seems very blurry, minimal communication, with no ownership or accountability of any aspect. Decisions are made financially for short term gain rather than long benefit of the show, customers or staff.

    Rat an das Management

Stop treating staff and teams like children. If you insist on employing kids you have to teach them and guide the experienced people into the right job in the business. Progression is minimal for all.
Support your sales teams with relevant and upto date collateral early enough in a show cycle for it to actually be useful.
We need more support from our 'support' teams. All seem stretched, over worked and undervalued.
Follow up on your commitment to be more customer focused. So many presentations and speeches over the years and months about the customer being put first and nothing has changed.
Some of the lack of knowledge among management is worrying, anyone can pull together a powerpoint.

    Pros

I wouldn't return to i2i for twice the money I was earning, but I did make some great friends while I was there and learnt a lot about the trade show industry.
There are some nice perks at times- yoga for example, and frequent social events.

    Kontras

Very little chance of progression. You won't be promoted- they just hire people in above you. The marketing structure is so segmented that people become specialists, which is detrimental if you're junior. Who is going to hire you going forward if you don't know the broader skills required?!

Management don't know what they're on about. Setting highly unrealistic targets and tearing you to shreds when you don't hit them (even if you already raised concerns when the targets were set...). There's also this very secretive vibe to a lot of the things which go on. Chill out. No one's really that fussed if there's new branding- do you really need to sneak around?
As much as the culture can be good, there's a feeling that you're 'not cool' if you don't get hammered at the socials. How old are we again? It's not a welcoming culture for some of us who are a little older and don't feel the need to get paralytic every Friday.
There is a very high value placed on some events, which can lead to you feeling like the work you do on 'less important' events is meaningless.
Being in Paddington is a pain. Unless you live in Reading.

    Rat an das Management

Know what you're talking about and treat your employees as actual people. Don't take things personally- it's business. Don't blame the people you manage for your shortcomings. We're all learning and there's no harm in admitting that. Don't take credit for things you didn't do! Surely it looks good on you if the person you manage thrives?

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei i2i Events gearbeitet

    Pros

A super fun environment to work in. The best thing about my time there was the opportunity to work across established events and new launches. The senior management were ( still are I hope!) really supportive. A true understanding that we were in it together through the highs and lows. There was visible progression and promotion of talent during my 5 years there ( especially with junior staters moving into event directors) which i think is really progressive.

    Kontras

One of the reasons I left is because I wanted to work on tech events. At that moment the event mix was heavily weighted in say retail for example.

    Rat an das Management

Keep recruiting good talent! Plus from.my observation it was sometimes a bit of a youth club atmosphere ( only natural given the opportunity to let go at the socials.)..older staff felt a bit like responsible adults. perhaps nip that in the bud.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei i2i Events gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

I really enjoyed working at i2i Events Group, the company has a fantastic atmosphere and hires really nice people making it an enjoyable and fun place to work.
The social side of the company is great, they put on regular social activities and the last Friday of each month there are drinks downstairs for everyone to join in on.
If you want to work in events, it is one of the most progressive & forward thinking exhibitions companies in the UK and definitely shows you how it should be done. Many of my colleagues whilst working there commented on how different, and how much better it was than many of the other competitors in the market.
I really enjoyed working in the marketing department and the role was challenging at times, particularly during peak event seasons, making the day go fast and the job interesting.
It's a good place to start a career within events & particularly marketing I think, and could definitely be a good thing to put on anyones CV.

    Kontras

There were a number of challenges and frustrations with working at i2i, firstly the structure of the marketing department isn't conducive to good or productive work. All the teams are silo-ed into individual disciplines making the communication between teams terrible and also narrowing your experience if you're quite a junior member of staff. not giving you the exposure to the full marketing spectrum. There is also so much work that is outsourced to other companies, like all the creative work, that the processes aren't efficient and makes day-to-day work quite frustrating having to jump through a million hoops to get work done.
The structure also doesn't allow for much movement, meaning that you're often stuck working on one or two events the entire time you work at the business, and it isn't easy to get into a more senior position if you join the company quite junior.
There is also a disparity between different shows and their value to the company, when the company were told there would no longer be any taxi travel permitted, and all the marketing departments had to start staying in separate hotels onsite to everyone else, the more senior members of staff at the company were still going onsite to overseas events just to 'see it'. This in itself is massively de-motivating to the people who actually work on the events itself and aren't given the opportunity to travel because they're no 'necessary onsite staff'. The company is quite hierarchical, and people in more senior positions often don't 'muck in' even when it's at peak time within the business.

    Rat an das Management

To retain staff at a more junior level I would recommend that they create more opportunities for progression. For anyone ambitious or driven, you can easily get de-motivated and bored. I would also make sure you practice what you preach, if you're not allowing staff to take taxis without emailing the CFO for permission, you shouldn't be allowing heads of departments to fly to overseas events without a need to do so.
