    Toxic culture, bad management, paid poorly in comparison to the amount of hours you put in. The team I worked in had absolutely the worst culture.

    Quality of work. New offices in Barangaroo much better than Park St.

    As for the B+I (banking) team... lawyers are constantly clock watching afraid to embrace the flexibility the firm sells to new recruits eg to work from home - no give and take whatsoever despite long hours. Total lack of pastoral care from the "people partner" (it's a joke among employees at all levels that she is even in the role) and a lack of leadership generally has fostered a toxic culture and allowed juniors... to learn bad behaviours from partners behaving like children. Infighting among lawyers is at an all time high and morale is at an all time low. There are basically no social events and separate mini-teams within the team, where certain partners exclude others they refuse to work with. Ask yourself why they cannot hire domestically and rely on foreign lawyers to fill the team...their banking team is one to AVOID. Only on leaving and experiencing somewhere else could I see it for what it was.

    Pros

    The work the partners bring in is top of the market and to work on this is a privilege, great experience. Lots of incredibly talents minds at all levels. Inclusive culture which celebrates each employee’s unique individual characteristics. The flat structure below partnership allows talented lawyers to get involved in complex deals early on in their careers.

    Managing workflows so that no one person is overworked is an issue. The partners are incentivised to run lean teams. The churn of lawyer is inevitable unless the priorities shift from drawings to ensuring it’s a sustainable place to work in the long term. There was always far to muc work or far too little. The sense of relief on leaving is indicative of how the place is geared to benefit from the insecurities of... some highly strung personalities.

    Pros

    Friendly and down to earth people, brilliant and approachable partners in my practice group, high profile matters and clients (the work is just excellent), plenty of resources invested into support (ie plenty of paralegal, IT and Legal Technology support), excellent pay, senior management very accommodating and responsive to employee needs and a stunning office in Barangaroo.

    Although leadership at partnership level is excellent and everyone is generally great to work with, there are a few senior lawyers who lack managerial skills entirely and exacerbate the pressures of the role. Hours are brutal like any top tier firm (its a misconception that G+T is mid tier - in practice it definitely is not, and I say this having worked in a “traditional” top tier prior) and very marginal room for... error but that is to be expected given the size of the matters and clients (who are extremely demanding). While this means you get exposure to excellent work, there can be an expectation to work very long hours and through weekends and holidays.

    The partner I assisted was nice though.

    A LOT of the girls at the Melbourne location are EXTREMELY rude and cliquey. Multiple girls crying in the bathrooms 24/7. Like high school. Management ADMITS there is an issue yet does nothing. Support staff quit regularly because of this, and other reasons. Also, they only have one IT guy in Melbourne (to save $). He’s really great but... don’t underestimate the stress that can come from lack of IT support - it was... a nightmare because they have THE slowest computers ( just to save a buck) and cheapest, slowest legal software (again just to save a buck). Bills going to clients 3 months late. Makes you look bad when it’s nothing to do with you, and I didn’t want to be known for that so I left. Also had to escape the nastiness.

    Pros

    Great work, top of the market remuneration. Excellent partners are some of best in their respective fields. No band structure so generally lawyers are given the work they can handle. Nice people.

    Minimal support staff and a very lean ship, which probably explains remuneration. Training is good however it is very ad hoc.

    Improve training depth and structure for junior solicitors and add some support staff to allow juniors to focus on their work rather than admin tasks.
