Pros

Very hard to think of any. Most of the drivers are not very welcoming, and if you don't fit into an ethnic clique, its a cold place. They will promise you its flexible etc etc. But its not at all. The shifts are inconvenient, getting time off for a Drs appointment is impossible under sick leave or annual leave. They will only grant you a shift swap with some awful shift no one else has volunteered to help out with. So, you get boned basically. The pay is ok, but once you factor in the work culture, the absolutely rubbish poorly maintained ancient gas buses that break down continuously, and the general unpleasantness of working with much of the public in Perth (e.g. personal abuse, constant fare evasion, being cut off by other drivers all the time), its hard to any joy in the job.

Kontras

Managers are lacking in professionalism. The biggest problem with the managers is that many are former drivers who think everything must be done the hard old way, and new staff just aren't 'tough enough'. They are hard to take seriously because no one who is a good driver becomes a manager, only the ones who think they're better than everyone else and driving a bus is beneath them. So, competence and empathy basically don't come into it. Even the slightest scratches made to buses result in an unpleasant inquisition like 'meeting' involving self-criticism and struggle sessions. Much like a communist dictatorship. Demoralising and humiliating. They have zero concept of modern work practices and professionalism. It was like working in the 1980s. And if you're not one of the 'in' crowd, you're out of luck. The company constantly harasses you and guilts you to do overtime (since they never have enough drivers, due to it being an awful job and being largely unsupported). The driver turnover is very high. The PTA timetables are utterly unrealistic and cannot be kept to. And of course you're expected to radio in any lateness, which means essentially you're on the radio all shift explaining why you're late, which is basically because Perth traffic is shite and the timetables have no fat in them at all. Its a good way to grind down your workforce.

Pros

Pay is decent, plenty of opportunity for over time. Management is decent most of the time. Opportunities for advancement and to work at other sights when work is down

Kontras

University holidays, breaks, and summer semester create a lot of financial hardships because those days are unpaid. After a year you get a week of PTO. No sick leave. They have a very strict point system. If you call out or leave early you lose points. 2 points per call out. They do not accept doctors notes. If you miss 5 days you're out of a job. The union helps but they have been more focused on pay increases when their is so much wrong. You are not only monitored by AI on the bus along with cameras but also have supervisors onsight that heavily enforce protocol in a way that makes the job highly stressful. You get pulled to the carpet over the most minor stuff. All of this has been from my perspective as driver. Their are better places out there in the industry but for this area you feel the safest here. If you can stomach all of this then try to advance as soon as you can. It gets much more flexible once you are in the office or become a supervisor.
