Pros

Smart, hardworking junior staff who keep the place going

Kontras

This is the most challenging environment I’ve worked in. The CEO, and his newish COO, are both as bad as each other - delusional, arrogant and unable to take feedback of any sort. The upshot is that it’s really a climate of fear and no one wanting to say anything that’s not the party line. Not the signs of a positive culture or working environment. This is in the context of the facade pretending that the culture is a good one. The whole narrative about Blakeney being a good place to work is entirely created by the SLT. You only have to look at the slew of good people that have left - most under some sort of cloud - to see that it’s far from a positive environment. This year alone, I think it’s eight or nine that have gone from across all levels - about 30% of the workforce. And I think some have left without jobs to go to, but just wanted to be out. And the big reason for this is that the moment you challenge anything, however big or small, you’re out of favour. Some people will just not be spoken to anymore by the CEO. Sometimes this will last for a while, other times not. But it’s all a big game of power and manipulation and control. And then people get to the point where they’ve had enough. These are experienced professionals, with years of experience and a real desire to do good work, being treated like children by someone behaving like a child. If you want to be treated like a grown up, and be happy and respected in your work please do not work at here. You’ll be a million times better off elsewhere.

Pros

My immediate colleagues are supportive and kind. You get the chance to work on new business early in your career.

Kontras

Morale is low. We’ve spent the last few months working on new business during the day and client work in the evenings and there isn’t any recognition or thanks. We’ve lost several of our flagship clients who we’d worked with for years. Loads of the team have left who were really important to the culture, including most of the senior team and now there aren’t any senior women left. Everyone who leaves seems to be really unhappy.  Everything is dominated by the CEO. The leaders have clear favourites and everyone who's not is on the outside. The only people who last here are those who are totally compliant. When things don’t go right, everyone else is blamed rather than there being any accountability by seniors.   There’s a lot of paranoia about glassdoor. Some of the team have been asked to post positive reviews on here by the CEO and he turned up at a former colleague’s leaving do to accuse her of writing a negative review. It feels like we can’t tell the truth.

Pros

Good location and some great people.

Kontras

The ‘sell’ to join is that the place is different, that they’re trying to build something different to everybody else. It could not be further from the truth. The culture is all defined by the CEO who hides behind his senior team. He has a new COO, there to act as an enforcer, and a people partner who anybody is yet to understand quite what she does. The CEO believes himself to be a world class strategist and communicator (although he can’t public speak without notes ironically) and he spends most of his time on Linkedin telling the world just how good he is. He then turns on people when his frustrations build that the facade of being the ‘world’s greatest’ isn’t matched with any meaningful client wins or industry recognition. The worst part of the experience is the lack of trust and the culture of fear. The senior team hunt as a pack and when they turn against people, it gets ugly. I saw lots of people sacked, forced out, and driven to distraction by unrealistic demands, poor leadership and constantly changing priorities. I regret ever joining and I feel very sorry for lots of good people still stuck there.
