Pros

You get to hang around some cool cars. The hours are light. Free snacks. A few bright people. The Hub is where there is some energy, but it is way down by the airport. This is great if you are on the peninsula.

The leadership team is lackluster. The CEO just hangs out in the Castro office because he enjoys the lifestyle. Unfortunately, he's a poor steward for the company. He has no real operations experience and it shows. He is totally uninvolved with the real operations (the actual service that is what the company does). His prior company Taxi Magic HAD some great adoption but it had quickly withered. There is a reason why he's not there. The leadership doesn't embrace the ideas of the mid and lower level workers. The employee turn over has been incredibly bad, the sharp people soon find out there are richer pastures out there. They tend to bring people on as "consultants" to extract the knowledge out and then when you join, if they do end up making you an offer, there really is no reason for them to pay you what you are worth. Same thing with the interview process, they look at it is free expert consulting, ask you to linkedin then they will mine your contacts and have the recruiters get ahold of all of YOUR contacts for the job that YOU are interviewing for. The other 5 star reviews are clearly shill reviews to make this place seem like it is a real legit operation. A lot of ex Googlers are good technologists, but poor leaders and managers. That is a problem that the VC needs to sort out.

Thanks for the feedback. As a leadership team, we have different responsibilities and we try to ensure that all of needs of the company are met. I focus on product strategy, business development, external efforts, recruiting, whereas other leaders are focused on day-to-day execution. There are a of senior members of the leadership team in the field regularly. I do think we have a good division of labor and that in many circumstances leaders who are more qualified to be in the field than me are present there. Running a startup that is just 2.5 years old is tough. Every day we learn how to do this better, and to improve how we manage our business. One thing that we have worked hard to improve is the communication of information to those that are in the field. I’m sorry your experience at Shift wasn’t what you had hoped for, and we very much appreciate your feedback. FYI, I left TaxiMagic because I needed to get my green card and per the US government, needed a more stable employer which is why I went to Google.
