Pros

I worked at Rockefeller University Press (part of the university but pretty independent of it). I feel so lucky to have been a part of the press: the work was steady and challenging, the benefits are amazing (one of the best benefits packages anywhere), and my coworkers and the general atmosphere are very supportive and laid back. I feel like I learned a lot while I was here, and that my contributions were valued.

Kontras

PhD-level scientific subject material can be challenging until you get used to it. Because it's a small press, there are limited opportunities for advancement, but you'll feel very secure in whatever position you have.

Pros

Top notch science and people. Labs are well funded. Best salary and benefits you'll ever find as a PhD student (salary/housing, fitness classes, etc). Nice campus, a little oasis in NYC. Lots of independence. A small and friendly community. Culture of work-life balance in many labs.

Kontras

Some perks have been cut recently. Lack of name recognition outside biology compared to comparable research institutions like Harvard, Columbia (biologists all know RU is on the same level, but non-biologists don't). We only do biology so there's not as much access to compsci, math, etc.
