Pros

Great opportunity for experience. My co-workers worked great as a team, and we had a reporting manager which would listen to our ideas and concerns; this person was respected highly by our team. The benefits were above average for the state. Although the company did not end up being a good match for me, there were employees who were very happy to be at Right Stuf. The standard hours of operation were good, and there were good opportunities for overtime.

Raises don't appear to be particularly substantial regardless of years of experience or additional duties and responsibilities, but it's very possible that this could vary and should be discussed during the hiring process if this is an important issue for yourself. Although the opportunity for experience is great, being a medium-sized company means that there are limited mid-level opportunities. Although there were employees that were happy to be at Right Stuf, there was an undercurrent of dissatisfaction among others. I perceived leadership as having sent mixed signals on how serious certain issues were, although I do not believe that was the intention. The possibility of mandatory seasonal overtime was a common gripe among certain employees and may not be for you―this should be considered during the hiring process.

Thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. We wish you much luck in all your future endeavors. Raises and salary are compared regularly to the Des Moines metro area and are within those comparative ranges. While we would like very much to be able to pay everyone more, the health of the overall organization has to be considered so that we have the ability to employee more employees instead of a few high paid employees. Unfortunately when unemployment jumps in an area, wages go down instead of up, but we have not followed that trend and have kept our starting wages comparative to what was pre-pandemic wages. We also make certain during the interview process, everyone understands there will be over-time during a peak seasons and it will be required, so to complain after the fact is really on them. It should also be remembered that this same requirement is made of the entire company including the salaried employees who do not get additional compensation like the non-exempts employees do. Without specifics we can't really address some of your statements, but as within any organization there will be people that are simply not happy about anything the organization tries to do because fundamentally they just aren't happy individuals. Unhappy individuals enjoy trying to pull co-workers into their unhappiness, so they openly communicate their negativity. While we hope this wasn't what prompted you to leave the organization, we hope you consider that regardless of where you go in life, there are going to be people a long the way that want you to join in their unhappiness because it affirms they were "right" to be negative. Don't fall into their trap, be the light that shines towards a brighter future. All the best to you and yours.

The people who work here are great. Getting to know them definitely made it difficult to leave.

Pretty much everything else. When I first started, it seemed like morale was decent, and ownership cared about the company. The longer I was there, the more obvious it became that was not the case. The management team says that they value feedback, and provide employees with feedback, but they don't. They don't want employees to gossip (to the point that they intentionally withhold information - what do you think that makes employees do?!), but then they gossip to and about the employees. They do not let employees know if there is an issue until they've basically already made the decision to terminate them - no corrective action on the employee's part will change their mind. Upper management kept saying that ownership made the worst business decision by hiring friends, replaced them, and then... hired their BFF, who they also live with. Employees do not feel comfortable coming forward with issues because of the relationship. That sort of hypocrisy does not breed trust. Upper management fails to notice the trickle down effect - your employees won't stop gossiping when you are doing that very thing, and they aren't going to want to work for someone they can't trust. It seems as though ownership has lost their passion for the business, and turned over the reins to people who care more about themselves than the people making the business run.

We really appreciate and value your feedback. We have actually made great strides in fixing a number of the issues you brought up, including hiring a Human Resources leader who the employees feel they can speak with openly and honestly. As it pertains to your comments around gossip, the management team values every employee and treats all employees with respect, while we cannot always stop gossip, we do understand that it will happen and do take positive measures to limit it. This pertains to the management staff as well and is dealt with on a case-by-case basis but we need to know it is occurring to make any changes. Our Human Resources department has an open-door policy. Additionally, Right Stuf hires based solely on qualifications of applicants regardless of their status or relationship with co-workers. We have even recently implemented a referral program as we highly encourage friend or family member referrals. We do believe that the Right Stuf is a great place to work!
