Because InfoWorld is one of the many publications of parent company IDG (International Data Group), it offers excellent benefits (including a fitness reimbursement stipend). Medical benefits are also great, as well as vision and dental. Another good thing about InfoWorld is the pleasant work environment -- it was recently revamped and is now lighter and brighter. The dress code is casual but not grungy and most of us work at home at least one day per week, which is great. Oh, and we also get free Fast Passes for public transit (although people who live outside SF don't get their whole commute paid for).

For a site that's all about technology, the inner workings of our Web site are pretty appalling. We let the support for our content management system lapse several years ago, and so increasingly, there are now file types and content functions that are pretty standard on the Web that we cannot avail ourselves of because the system won't handle it. The oversight of the Web site is handled by a group on the east coast that has little to no interest in hearing about what the editorial staff actually needs to present content most effectively. In addition to bad technology, leadership at all levels is abysmal. From the highest levels, it is not particularly Web savvy ("I don't know what this Facebook stuff is, but it's hot so we better get on it!"). Editorial leadership aches for help: there is little vision and little respect for "the little people."
