Pros

Students were awesome, got good experience since the department is so decentralized you basically run all the functions for your building, Bloomington is a nice city.

Kontras

Residential Programs and Services was a horrible environment to work in. They reward incompetence, and give promotions to people who have been there the longest. There were a number of husbands/wives working in the department (at different supervisory levels) which was so inappropriate. They've tried to recently make some changes, but they still can't retain employees. They pay terribly (no FLSA bump, big surprise), and act like any situation is the first time they've ever dealt with it. The department is not located in student affairs, and functions more as a business since it is an auxiliary. They can't ever get fully staffed, because the competent people leave. There isn't any focus on student development, because the Executive Director is an MBA who only cares about profit. I have never seen so many outrageous and negligent actions by professional staff members that put the lives of residents at risk. One person in the department almost got fired for refusing to cover up a Title IX issue. The environment is abusive, you'll be overworked (if you care - if not, you can go shopping and take naps half the day like the other staff) and the department does not care about its employees. Live-In staff apartments are horrific, they turn the heat/air/hot water off all the time and don't care, and filled with broken student lounge furniture. Run away - I'm not kidding. Nobody else at the university will want to hire you because RPS has such a bad reputation - and that's something known nationally as well. This place is messed up.

We are sorry to see that you had a poor experience while here at the university. As you can see by the reviews on Glassdoor and other sites, IU is truly an Employer of Choice, an employer that cares about both their employees and their students. At IU, we sponsor an open and safe work environment. We encourage and invite all employees, current and former, with concerns about their work environments to bring them forward so they can be addressed in a timely and fair manner.
