Pros

Flexible working hours and working from home. Social events and happy hours. Great people to work with on a daily basis. Opportunities to become an expert in a particular area.

Kontras

Redundancies recently so you don't know if your job is safe. No real career plan or guidance to move up the chain especially on the engineering side. Goal setting is just a tick box exercise at the end of the year. You learn not to expect bonuses, pay rises or training. People are leaving the company so much that it's hard to know who even still works here. The staff who go aren't being replaced which puts even more pressure on the people who are left. Big focus on customer satisfaction but not on employee satisfaction.

As a healthy business, we regularly review our business objectives against our organizational structure to ensure we are working optimally to achieve our strategic initiatives and provide our customers with an outstanding experience. We also recognize that the sometimes subsequent change can be difficult. We do have a high level of engagement within the business. This is evidenced by our Best Place to Work 2018 and Great Place to Work 2019 certifications are as a result of direct employee feedback and engagement scores well above the minimum required, which we are proud of. However, participation in these or becoming a marketeer for the business by engaging in social media posts, for example, are purely voluntary. Please feel free to connect with me directly if you have an interest in developing a career plan for you given your unique perspective, skill set and interests. Although we are not a large business and do not have a complex career ladder, to your point there are opportunities to expand your expertise and I would be happy to work with you this. The company is pursuing an exciting innovation path. We have been leading from a platform innovation perspective and are now pushing into some very exciting innovations for the next few years.

Get the message out louder....we are doing some exciting things for the publishing community and our innovative capability is exciting.

Pros

HighWire Press always was and still is a fairly typical Silicon Valley tech sweatshop, better than some, worse than others. What set it apart was that it was a non-profit which was a department of Stanford. It was great to be part of a world-class academic institution and Stanford had phenomenal benefits. HighWire also hired many extraordinarily smart people. While always chaotic, there was an all-for-one attitude for many years.

Kontras

New executive management was brought in 3 years ago who executed brutal layoffs and constantly changed their strategy. Many of the best people were either layed off or quit when the managerial culture became so toxic. Workloads became enormous and people squabled to get get work off of their plate and onto somebody else's. Much of the work was off-shored to India with very mixed results. Things improved somewhat over the past year due to process improvements. The core technology is an antique, despite efforts to freshen it up around the edges. HighWire has recently been spun-off from Stanford as a privately held, for-profit corporation, so all of the benefits of being associated with Stanford have evaporated.

We have made many many positive changes over the last two years in the areas of focus, innovation and improved platform and core technology and will continue to take additional steps to improve.
