I think it varies tremendously among departments. Soon after I started, it became clear that the products I was hired to manage were being phased out…so it was just a countdown until my eventual layoff. Ask in the interview the five-year plan for whatever product or service the job description specifies. And ask what kind of profit those services/products generate for the company. Company seems to always be in transition.
