    Pros

Bonuses , although other competitors pay a higher basic salary.

    Kontras

    - Poor management (under qualified, lacking expertise and make up for this by being aggressive).
    - 1970s culture.
    - zero flexibility, shocking anyone can be this backwards, long probationary and notice periods.
    - Lack of trust, anyone new is deemed a novice or untrustworthy.
    - Staff are not given laptops in the event they dare work from home.
    - Ridiculously long hours.
    - Not receptive to change.

    Rat an das Management

Place more value on your employees and move into the 21st century.

Advice to prospective employees, if you join, do so on a freelance basis.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Berkeley Group (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Some of the developments are quite high profile.
    - Some people think that Berkeley is the holy grail so it has the potential to have prestige on your CV.

    Kontras

    - This is one of the most backward, antiquated and draconian companies I have ever encountered. The company is managed like a company from the 1980s.
    - Money is treated as its greatest asset, not its employees.
    - There are no maternity or paternity benefits. People on maternity/ paternity leave are often referred to as being 'on holiday'.
    - There is absolutely no way to work flexible hours. People who have special arrangements are by exception only and are told by senior management not to tell others of their arrangements. They are also joked about when they leave 'early'.
    - There are no options to work from home.
    - There is no payment for sick leave if you are in the first year of your employment (because new people cannot be trusted).
    - The pension benefits are pathetic in comparison with other FTSE100 companies.
    - The gender pay gap is atrocious.
    - People work under a 'climate of fear'.
    - Staff who are 5 minutes late are reprimanded.
    - Managing directors and senior management operate under the awe/ in the fear of Tony Pidgley, rather than having conviction in themselves.
    - Its computer systems are extremely outdated. Payroll, annual leave, invoice approvals, expenses are all paper-based (even though the company prides itself on its 'respect' for the plant).
    - The HR department undertakes administrative aspects of HR only, so all grievances, issues, etc have to be raised with the senior personnel an employee is working under.
    - Almost everyone is severely overworked. This stems from decisions dictated by the three people right at the top. The top cheese squeeze resources so much and rarely interface with people on the ground to witness the stressful conditions people are working in. Even MDs and directors are overworked and look bitterly exhausted. There are board meetings at 7am, often with pre-meets at 6am. There are sometimes site visits at 5am with no flexibility to offset these meetings. Core hours are 8.00-5.30pm but most people work overtime as a standard.
    - Employees are treated like cattle. Company divisions are frequently formed and reformed without any warning and people are moved around (in terms of role and geographical location) with next to no notice.
    - People disappear, including very senior people, who are walked out of the door by security and are never to be seen again.
    - Consultants and subcontractors are screwed over on most projects because Berkeley is the 'client' in every situation it can be and offsets its own poor management on its suppliers.
    - Staff aren't supported in their development. Often people find themselves being promoted because a new division has been formed without having the due support and coaching required.
    - Some senior leaders are terrible managers but are too expensive to pay off so are relocated to other divisions, making their performance another company's issue.
    - It is extremely difficult for 'full-time' parents to progress in this company because the system rewards people who sacrifice their lives for their jobs. This is unsustainable for 'full-time' parents who end up leaving the company or settling in lower roles that let them pay the bills.
    - People are micromanaged which results in staff losing the incentive to be proactive and take initiative.
    - Staff are practically bullied into donating to the company's chosen charities so that the company can benefit from the PR, rather than enabling staff to support charities they are passionate about.
    - Salary reviews do not involve the staff being reviewed. The staff simply receive a letter around May with any increases. If they’re unhappy, they have to wait until November until their salary is reviewed again. The result of this is that carrots are constantly being dangled with people being strung along for months.
    - The list goes on...

    Rat an das Management

Stop burying your heads in the sand and stop thinking Berkeley is immune to 21st century expectations of jobs, careers, training, support, equality and happiness.

    Pros

some nice people, fruit, milk, occasional treat

    Kontras

Treated like automatons. If you are happy just doing as your told without any opinion or recognition of your talents or experience, you will love it here. You won’t progress tho unless you are a pet of the senior management. Then you are asked for your opinion on everything outside your expertise and listened to AND you don’t have to be particularly good at the job you’ve been brought in to do, as long as you act as a spy on your colleagues. There is no realHR to complain to especially if you are not one of the pets. very much a job for the boys mentality, stuck in the 1980s.

    Rat an das Management

SLT get your act together - stop the political games. We are supposed to technological leaders to a world class business, - allow us to act like it. Oh and do something about gossip corner - surely those people have some work to do?

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Berkeley Group gearbeitet (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

Free teas and coffees and breakfast. Fancy offices and reputable company image by appearing in charitable causes on social media while neglecting other core values and failing to treat employees justly.

    Kontras

You have absolutely no rights as an employee working for this company! No matter how long you have worked there for you’ll be treated like a slave. Bullying and male dominated environment. Ridiculously long hours and if you leave at the and of your working hours you’ll be frowned upon. You are expected to put an extra one to one and half hour of unpaid work everyday. Working lunch breaks, extreme pressure, lack of team sprit as everyone is so overworked. In general controlling and slavery culture. You’ll never get to meet the CEO or even have a conversation with the MD. You are just a number, hired to do your slave work for as long as they need you and they will get rid of you in a blink of an eye when they think you are not needed, without following any procedure at all. Employee rights is nonexistent in this company regardless of the length of service. No HR function to speak to. If you happen to work for this company be sure you become a trade union member but try to avoid it at all cost!

    Rat an das Management

Be more humane to your employees!

    Pros

    Free tea, coffee and parking

    Kontras

The SLT don't really understand best practices such as ITIL and Prince2. Managers are not empowered. There working week is at least 42.5 hours. The benefits are non-existent. The good people leave or get pushed. There is a huge element of inconsistency. The don't listen to the experts and wonder why things don't work or projects don't get delivered.

I would never want to work there again.

    Rat an das Management

Get an understanding of IT and trust your managers.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Berkeley Group (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

Great ethics for quality products and the delivery of excellent customer service throughout all disciplines

    Kontras

Expectations on staff are unbelievably high, long working days, unreasonable build programmes, blame culture, no support from directors, no recognition at year end of all the hard work put in, lowest bonus payment ever received.

    Rat an das Management

Take a good hard look at yourselves, just because it’s aleays been that way doesn’t mean it can’t change. The staff retention figures should be ringing massive alarm bells all the way to the top.
