    Pros

    Deal teams are very small which is great for junior personnel, as you can take over a lot of responsibilities early on. Also, there is high exposure to senior personnel. Many direct interactions with Managing Directors/Directors internally and also direct client interaction on a regular basis. Even though the pay is average for mid-market IB, the bonus is all cash which is a big plus!

    Kontras

    It's middle-market M&A Investment Banking, which is what they pay for. However, the work load is more like bulge bracket - For Analysts it is common to work 85+ hours per week. It's a good place to gain experience and exposure but for the long term there is not the right leadership to develop junior personnel into bankers.

    The senior bankers at Baird need to focus more on developing juniors. They work with what they have but don't try to improve their bankers.

    I'd suggest that upper management recognize when they have a manager that is overwhelmed due to additional workloads. A great manager can fold when you pile on their work without additional resources.

    Second, recognize that just because someone does a job well doesnt mean they are qualified to be a manager. Baird has some folks that are in managerial roles strictly because they've done the job long enough for a promotion. Provide more managerial training and realize not everyone has the personality to lead...

    Pros

    Everything I read about Baird before joining has been true so far. The culture is fantastic and breathes this entrepreneur-type spirit. I've never worked for a company that cares more about it's people. Management is great at giving people opportunities outside of their day job and provides tons of developmental support. The work/life balance is very attractive. Flexible work options and flex-hours give the employees the chance to step in and out as needed. If you want to grow your career, this is the place to go.

    Only potential "con" is that because Baird is relatively large, it can be easy to get silo'd in your department. But many employees make it a priority to work cross-functionally.

    Pros

    100% cash compensation, Baird Scholar program (one of the few remaining companies that will pay for you to get your MBA - full time), culture really does hold up (you don’t have to be an a-hole to work in finance), have made concerted effort to improve the junior banker experience (No Saturday work policy, encourage analysts to participate early and often in pitches, client / buyer meetings, etc.). Good benefits for the most part (401k / HSA match, profit sharing).

    Nascent mentor program and development / resource database, although management is making conscious effort to improvement both. High copays and trading fees.

    Processes are long, need to find ways to celebrate the little wins more often (team lunches/drinks when mandates are awarded or deals sign). Small team building activities do much more for morale than one might think.

    Pros

    Great culture. Friendly people, laid back environment, no micromanagement which is great. Lots of events that foster relationship building between employees. There is also a great work/life balance.

    Kontras

    Because the environment was so laid back, it opened up the door for sexual harassment under the guise of playing jokes. There was an incident where someone kept leaving large sausages in a young lady's chair. Another time her supervisor had her "open wide" for a treat.

    HR needs improvement. I reached out for help when I had an issue with my supervisor and they were no help at all.

    More training for managers in the areas that they manage. My manager had really no idea of what my day to day job was or tools that we used and would often cancel meetings.
