The Helmholtz Institute HI-TRON is a collaboration of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with the Research Institute for Translational Oncology at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (TRON gGmbH), the University Medical Center Mainz and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The goal of the partnership is to develop effective immunotherapies and to identify novel biomarkers for assessing the effectiveness of treatment.
Job description:
We are looking for an excellent researcher with a strong expertise in the field of translational onco-immunology or immunotherapies. The position will establish a translational research group close to the University Medical Center at the Johannes Gutenberg University. Your main task will be to support Prof. Dr. Özlem Türeci, who is member of the HI-TRON Mainz Scientific Management Board, in leading her research group at HI-TRON Mainz. Candidates with an outstanding scientific track record and a dedicated high-potential research program will have the opportunity to gain experience in co-supervising a research group, mentoring graduate students and postdocs, and guiding technical staff.
In addition to personnel responsibility, you will be responsible for scientific project management and the acquisition of third-party funding. On site, you become a key contact person for scientific matters of the department. Working with Prof. Türeci, you will both continue your own research ideas and implement new translational, collaborative research projects. The position thus offers you the unique opportunity to learn from a high-caliber scientist in a lively, motivated environment while still building or refining your own expertise.
Requirements:
We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious scientist (with PhD, MD or MD-PhD degree) with more than 5 years of postdoctoral experience in translational or clinical research at the time of application (periods of parental leave, nursing leave or unavoidable downtime will be considered). Several years of professional experience in leading research projects is required; as well as the willingness to lead complex projects in an international environment across institutions and with collaborative partners, especially at the interface of basic, translational, and clinical research. Applicants should have succcessfully applied for third-party funding, a good scientific track record and experience in presenting their research in an international setting.
The candidate should have profound knowledge in the field of onco-immunology, immunotherapies and patient data management. Strong interest in the identification of novel tumor biomarkers and experience in supporting the transfer of laboratory research to the clinic would be a great asset.
The scientist should have a very structured, precise and independent working style, an analytical mindset and good problem solving skills. Excellent written and oral English language skills are expected, German language skills are desirable but not mandatory. Enthusiastic team players with very good communication skills are desired.

Duration: The position is limited to 5 years, provided that all requirements according to the Act on Fixed-Term Employment Contracts in Academia (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG) are met.
The position can in principle be part-time.
