As part of your role within OPAL-RT Germany’s R&D team, you will have the chance to work with experts in the field of simulation and to design tools at the cutting edge of technology. Your focus will be in advancing real-time simulation and computing technology using CPUs, FPGAs and other emerging computing platforms.

A key component of real-time simulation systems is the software that runs on CPUs and the firmware that runs on FPGAs. Key applications will include real-time simulation of power systems and power electronics and some mechanical systems. Most of these applications require high computing performance while offering users of our tools, who are not computing experts, intuitive user interfaces. Furthermore, the dynamic simulations implemented on OPAL-RT platforms are characterized by differential-algebraic equations and the software specialist needs to have a conceptual understanding of the associated solvers. The work in this position brings together several aspects of software, hardware, engineering and mathematics.

Main Duties:

• Executing and documenting government-funded R&D projects related to multi-timescale (RMS-EMT) power systems and power electronics simulation (offline and real-time);
• Collaborating with business development teams on transitioning R&D concepts to product;
• Assisting with pre-sales and post-sales customer projects;
• Publishing and presenting technical papers;
• Contributing to OPAL-RT’s technological roadmap.

Requirements:

• Education: Ph. D. or a master’s degree in Electrical engineering or in a related field;
• Experience: 3 – 4 years of relevant experience in a field that covers the development or application of real-time simulation; also, experience in simulation of power systems (offline and real-time) using tools such PSCAD, Digsilent PowerFactory, PLECS, Simulink/SimPowerSystems, RT-LAB/HYPERSIM, RSCAD, Typhoon-HIL;
• Language abilities: Fluent in both German and English (knowledge of French is an asset);
• Required skills: Strong background in power systems and power electronics simulation and modeling, as well as comprehensive knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink.
• Significant technical assets: Knowledge of C/C++, Python, VHDL/Xilinx System Generator.
• Soft skills: Good team-working attitude.
