Very simple 30 min remote interview. Asked decent questions but the job itself didn't seem appealing. They started with salary and asked me to confirm if I would like to move forward with the interview based on the salary.

The Yelp Community Manager interview process consisted of 1 phone conversation with the hiring manager, a zoom with the hiring manager, extensive writing test and final zoom interview with another team member. All of the interviews were about 30 minutes or less, and I found them really casual and easier than at many other large corporate organizations I've interviewed with. I found that I didn't learn very many details about the role until the final interview, it was very candidate focused.

I didn’t get an interview. The job posting was online for maybe one to two weeks at most. According to the job they wanted someone who knew everything about the city. The Instagram account was active which I found odd, but thought maybe somebody was managing it until they hired someone. I got a rejection email, and hours later I was sent a new Yelp Elite event to attend. I immediately knew they hired from within, because there is no way somebody could plan an event within a couple days of being hired. I did a little digging and of course the new community manager transferred from a different city. So much for hiring someone who knew all about the current city! Why bother even posting the job listing online when you have clearly hired from within? It’s bad business and it’s wasting applicants’ time. This really left a negative taste in my mouth about Yelp, and whether it’s in your company policy or not to list a job posting, maybe you should post a disclaimer that you already have somebody from within that will most likely be taking the position.

Vorstellungsgespräch

I applied for the Community Manager position while I was already an active ‘Elite’ member of the Yelp Community in my area. What followed were possibly the most stressful four months of my life, which gradually started to take a toll on my mental health. After submitting the application and waiting around a month to hear back, I had an initial phone interview with the line manager for the position, followed by an interview in-person with the same manager. A few weeks later I was then asked to do a phone interview with another Community Manager in another city. It was moving a little slowly, but so far, so good. Then things went quiet. After weeks of waiting, they got back in touch and told me that I was still in the running, and asked me to put together a mock version of the ‘Weekly Yelp’ newsletter on a subject of my choice. I did this, taking hours and hours of research, and then... silence again. The hiring manager eventually got in touch and apologised for the delay and told me that they’d be back in touch in the next few days, but it was actually several more weeks until I heard from them again. In the meantime, it was emphasised that I must remain active on Yelp and continue writing reviews and interacting with other members, particularly in welcoming new members to the site and encouraging them to keep posting reviews. I was told that the higher-ups at Yelp would be keeping a close eye on my profile behind the scenes to decide on my suitability for the role. Essentially, I was expected to act as if I had already got the job and to provide Yelp with free content and engagement with its users, while I waited around for them to make a decision. When I did hear from them, it was with yet another stage of the process: a list of written questions that they needed me to send my answers to ‘ASAP’. One of those questions asked me to ‘plan a Yelp event for 50 people’, complete with a list of local businesses that I would use for the event, a detailed breakdown of costs, a theme for the event and an exact running order for the evening. Again, this took hours of research. And again... silence for weeks and weeks after I had sent it. By this point I had devoted days of my life to the application process (at no point during which, by the way, had they ever mentioned the salary for the role) as well as weeks of sleepless nights waiting to hear something back from them. Eventually - several months after my first interview for the role - they finally got back to me with the most lukewarm rejection I have ever received. I was told that they ‘might’ still give me the job but that they were going to ‘keep looking’ for a couple more months first. Most frustratingly, after so much time and effort put into applying for the role, they refused to even give me any proper feedback on my application. Instead I was brushed off with a vague comment about how my performance at all stages had been stellar but that the senior managers just weren’t sure whether I was the ‘right fit’. These were people who had never taken the time to meet with me or even speak to me on the phone at any point during the process. Throughout the process it was very clear that Yelp have a very high opinion of themselves as a very ‘special’ place to work and that this therefore justifies an extremely long, stressful and insulting recruitment process. But if this is how they treat prospective employees then I cannot imagine what it must be like to actually work there. Eventually they did give the job to someone else, and I consider it a lucky escape because that person was laid off again just a few months later!

Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch
  • Lots of emphasis on what specific things you can bring to the role in terms of existing networks and contacts. Asked to share lots of ideas for events and other ways for Yelp to increase its presence in the city.

Applied online. A regional manager reached out to me via e-mail and arranged a skype interview. After that, I was moved along to the writing test which had 3 questions. Then had 3 more skype interviews with another senior community manager and senior executives in the community department. Overall, it was a great experience and everyone I spoke to seemed to love working for Yelp.

It's a long process, but considering the position is remote and you're solely responsible for the city you manage, it's understandable. They communicate well throughout the process. You'll likely start off on a video call basis with 2-3 different people. If you make the shortlist, they will fly into your given city and host an in person interview. The manager in charge of my particular interview was lovely, communicated well and asked tough but meaningful questions. Overall, it was a solid process and though the wait time is nerve wracking, it was a good experience.

I applied online and was contacted by a regional manager to have a phone interview. The conversation went well and I was advanced to the writing sample round of the interview process, but I withdrew to pursue an opportunity elsewhere. I got the impression that the workload would be very heavy and that there would be very long work hours. This isn't something I'm looking for at this point in my career.

Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch
  • What would you plan for the ultimate Yelp Elite event?
  • How do you feel about working 60 hour work weeks? You don't just work at Yelp - you live it.

I applied for the position of Community Manager Amsterdam in January. I received a very positive reply to my application and I had high hopes for nailing it. But then they suddenly changed the position and informed me that I was put 'on hold'. After finally receiving an invitation for a job interview I was told that the position was changed to a 'freelance position'... and at the second interview they informed me that the position had changed once again and I received a very poor offer. Overall a very disappointing experience, which I did not expect from Yelp.

I applied online and later contacted to conduct a phone interview. A few days after that, I was asked to have a Skype interview (with same person), complete a writing test, and then I spoke with another senior level regional manager over the phone. The CM position is a remote roll, so all interviews were held over the phone or Skype. The hiring manager was very communicative via email and kept me in the loop through the entire process. I did go about 2 weeks without hearing anything back, but that was over Christmas.

Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch
  • Give background experiences that relate to this position.
  • Describe your perfect Elite event.
  • What is the number one thing you may need to teach business owners about Yelp's free services?
  • What metrics do you think you will be evaluated against?
  • Writing test questions: 1) Get us excited about a fantastic birthday party you are throwing for yourself using only 140 characters. 2) Get us really excited about the very last meal you had (even if it was cereal over your kitchen sink). 100 words. 3) Get us really, really, excited about your plans this weekend (even if your “plans” include waking up in the PM and wearing Crocs all day). 250 words.

Terrible interview with a woman who has little understanding of marketing or community management. Claimed Yelp "invented digital community and community management." Entire interview focused on questions about where I liked to eat and go. The PD was for a Community Manager but the way the role was described was for an Events Manager.

Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch
  • Where do you like to eat, who has the best coffee, where do you go on the weekends, what are your favourite cafes.
