There are three bags, one contains only red marbles, one contains only green marbles and the last contains both red and green. You do not know how many marbles are in each bag. Each of the bags is incorrectly labelled. How many times do you have to draw to figure out the correct labels of each bag?

5 Antworten

One draw

two draws max

Draw one from each bag first (i.e. three in total) - two will be of the same colour. You could get red, green and green, for example. In that case, the bag you drew the red from is red only. Now you need to work out which of the other 2 bags is green only and which is mixed. So then you need to draw one from each of the 2 bags until you find a red - the one you draw the red from is the mixed bag. Therefore, the total number of draws you would need is unknown. Weniger

Hi, please can you shed some light on the mathematical questions you had to do in 15 mins? Were they problem questions (with words and numbers) or just a load of sums you need to do fill in? I have an interview and am worried... I am numerically dyslexic (dyscalculia) so need to thoroughly practice before it!!! thank you Weniger

They are a mixture of questions. Some are just sums and others are written form, eg. Ane is 2 years younger than Dave, and Scott is double the age of Dave etc. they can be pretty wordy but I'm honestly not sure they are bothered about this section! There are plenty of examples online though :) Weniger

Didn't think I would get an answer, so many thanks for that!

Hi, I know it's been a while but i was if anyone had any further information on the interview? Weniger

What other questions did they ask? Also, was there a presentation you had to do?

If you were in a room with three light switches, and you could not see out of the room and you could only leave the room once. The three corresponding light bulbs are in another room. How do you tell which light switches belong to which bulbs?

3 Antworten

(I mean you would put one resistor in series with each of the three switches, obviously; the greatest value resistor would result in the most dimming). Weniger

My answer to this is: Assign a value to each light switch (A,B,C) Start a timer for 3 minutes Flip switch A and B on After the 3 minutes is up, flip B off again. Go into the other room. The lighting bulb belongs to switch A The the other two light bulbs (one will be hot and one will be cold) The hot bulb belongs to switch B The cold bulb belongs to switch C. Weniger

Assumptions: You have three inputs: X, Y, Z with two possible states (0,1). You have three outputs: A,B,C with two possible states (0,1). The inputs and outputs are independent of each other, but one input should be matched to one output. For example, if X --> A, then X(1) --> A(1). Note: we don't actually know whether the normal state of the switch is open or closed. For our purposes 0 is normal state, 1 is abnormal state. You have one chance to observe the outputs. You could flip one of the switches and observe, but this will only tell you about one of the connections and leave two unknowns. You could flip two switches, but this still leaves two unknowns. You could flip all three, but this leaves three unknowns. You could flip none of them, but that leaves three unknowns. Another possibility is to McGyver the light switches by placing three resistors of different values in series with the switch, verifying the switch is closed, and then observe the relative brightnesses of the bulbs. More creatively, you could use your one trip to leave the room to find the documentation and/or the persons responsible for this cruel experiment. I am sure this is wrong, but I was never a math or CS major. =D Weniger

I can't remember the questions exactly but they were related to your personal skills and experiences and how these link to DLG and they values.

Hey, remain patient as it took a couple of weeks for me to hear back. I was also told that they were still in the process of letting applicants know the outcome and that they still had over half the people to inform. I'm sure you will be contacted one way or another so fingers crossed! Weniger

Hi there, I had my assessment centre later than you on the 18th of August and have still not heard anything. Any idea if this is good or bad and when I should expect to hear back? Thanks in advance Weniger

Hey I did an assessment centre almost two weeks ago now and haven't heard anything yet - do you know if unsuccessful applicants are also told by phone? :) thanks! Weniger

Q: Assume you want to get from city A to city B. There are three roads you can choose uniformly from. However only one road leads actually to city B, which takes 2 hours. The other two roads end up in city A again and both are 1 hour long. Given that you don't know which road you took, If you return to city A (i.e. you have to choose uniformly a road again), what is the expected time to get to city B?

2 Antworten

2.5 hours (if expected time is the same as expected value here)? If it's equally probable to choose right (2 hour) or wrong (1 hour) and then, finally, right (2 hour) route (i.e. total 3 hours), then the expected time is the mean (2+3)/2 = 2.5 hours Weniger

Let’s play a game of Russian roulette. You are tied to your chair and can’t get up. Here’s a gun. Here’s the cylinder of the gun, six chambers, all empty. Now watch me as I put two bullets in the gun, adjacent to each other. I close the cylinder and spin it. I put a gun to your head and pull the trigger. Click. Lucky you! Now I’m going to pull the trigger one more time. Which would you prefer, that I spin the cylinder first, or that I just pull the trigger?

2 Antworten

Better to spin again since probability of hitting would decrease to 2/6 from 2/5. Weniger

Its better not to spin.
