    Vorstellungsgespräch

Had phone interview with the hiring manager in which they learned more about my previous work and responsibilities. Of course there was no creative with whom to talk about my actual design work or process. At the end I was told they'll get back to me and never did.

The process was long, they take the recruitment process seriously and they put a lot of effort into providing a good candidate experience. All my questions were quickly answered and I recieved useful feedback in all the steps of the process. In the final stage another candidate was chosen but I had a very positive experience overall.

Ich habe mich online beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 4 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im Dezember 2018 bei albelli (Amsterdam (Niederlande)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

After applying online to the position, I received a call from the recruiter to set up an initial conversation. The first interview with HR was to understand my experience and expectations and to present an overview of the company.

Then I received a technical assignment to build a REST API following some requirements. The test demanded around 4 to 6 hours, but there are no time constraints for it.

Next phase was a technical interview with the team members who reviewed the tech assignment, there were questions related to the test and technical questions in general, including topics like performance, application's monitoring, LINQ (.NET) and so on.

Then I had a non-technical interview with the team manager and the recruiter, they wanted to know what I value in a job and about my soft skills. They also presented more details about the company.

Finally, they invited me to visit the company in Amsterdam and I had a face to face interview including pair programming and meetings with the teams. Next day they invited me to the office and presented me an offer.

The whole process was smooth and well communicated, and I was very well welcomed by the team during the in-person interview.

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich online beworben. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im März 2018 bei albelli.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

The whole process was smooth an relatively fast.

First, there was a brief interview with HR, followed by a technical assignment (build a RESTful web service to serve the domain of customers and orders for an online store). It took them 2-3 days to check the assignment, and then a technical Skype interview was scheduled.

The interview had some standard questions about work experience and some general .NET questions. Then there was a discussion of my assignment with some questions regarding architectural and other technical decisions. After that, they asked me to share my screen via Skype and make a console application that would calculate the amount of time it would take for an online store order system to process several orders consisting of different items.

Then there was another HR interview over Skype. I think this was the most friendly and relaxed interview that I've ever had. They told me all about their company, why they love working there and why they want me to join, asked a few personal questions ("What's your favorite movie?")

So far, everything was going great. Then we went on to discuss the exact salary, and unfortunately they couldn't offer the amount that I expected, so we had to stop the process. Which is a pity, since everyone who I talked to at Albelli seemed very professional, friendly and cheerful. I hope in the future they can raise their salary a bit to make it more competitive.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

    TL;DR

The entire technical interview felt like they are just trying to prove that I'm not a developer and they are. After seeing their 4.4 on Glassdoor, I went there with an expectation of a friendly and welcoming environment, but the experience was totally opposite.

    Long version:

I've applied online. After a very brief and friendly phone talk with the recruiter, I've been sent a task to build a simple RESTful API with 4 methods. I've completed it using Onion-layered Architecture, with a nice separation between infrastructure and business logic and 96% test coverage on business logic and checked in my code to bitbucket in small steps as suggested.

Next day, I've received a feedback that they want to proceed and invite me over for a technical interview.

I've arrived 10 mins early, escorted (I would have loved to say welcomed by, but that wasn't the feeling) in by the interviewers (Solution Architect and a developer). Since I was early, the meeting room was occupied, therefore I've been offered to take some coffee (a fun part when you get to use a new coffee machine all by yourself, I thought, is this also part of the interview, your coffee machine solving skills?)

After their self-introductions, I've been asked if I know what albelli is doing. I've answered directly as "You are an online photo printing business". Apparently, that was not the correct answer, so I've been asked if I haven't check their website before coming to the interview. I did, but I thought maybe I've missed something big and the interviewer looked a bit agitated, so I said: "I haven't had a chance to go into details." (Today, I've re-checked, they are an online photo printing business in a nutshell)

Then the meeting room got free and we went in.

I can't remember all the questions clearly, but the first 90 minutes passed with questions and answers. They had around 5-10 questions prepared, the rest was improvised on the spot. They are ranged from the difference between GET and POST (had to ask clarification whether are we talking about the meaning of it in RESTful context or in general part of HTTP protocol), and why I would prefer iteration over recursion and if I've ever heard about tail optimization.

The general feeling was that both sides were trying to show that they know better than the other side, but the interviewing party had the home field advantage and they were asking the questions, but they didn't have to answer. So, I eventually lost that battle :)

Then comes the SQL problem. First, a simple select, then a join. Then came the question where I had to create a complex query using 2 tables and a business rule to calculate the thickness of a package, but one of the items can stack up to 4 items and rest can't. I would say I've failed at this. Haven't been using SQL for business logic since 10 years. Eventually, using some MSDN, some StackOverflow, I've reached the expected result, while them talking about StackOverflow development. (Your job posting was on StackOverflow :)

Now, 2 hours passed and I'm extremely stressed and tired, apparently, I lost this battle already. The interviewer said: "Ok, let's test your C# skills now". And then he opened notepad and told me to create a solution to find islands on a graph. I told him that I haven't had a use case for graph algorithms for a while, so I could not do it. He didn't get the clue that I'm already forfeiting and really don't wanna work there, asked me another question to remove non-unique parts of a string. I've told him no thank you, it's been more than 2 hours now and I'm tired, I would like to leave.

While leaving, I've told him I was expecting the part of the interview would be discussing the case study I've sent, he told me that was a very simple task anyway.

    So I left.

Next day, I've received a call from the recruiter (internal one, from the first phone call), asking me feedback about the interview. I gave the feedback, negative one, and thanked him for the chance. He said it's better than seeing it on Glassdoor. Also apologized that the interviewers are still getting used to doing interviews. I thanked him again for giving me a chance for being a part of their interview process trials.

Everything went nice and smooth. I had a nice experience at Albelli. HR and Design manager asked me a lot of questions about my experience and how would I handle potential situations if joined the company. After that I got a test task. In a couple of weeks after everything was checked I've got an offer. Albelli helped me to relocate to Amsterdam including visa and working permit support.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

I applied for Senior Software Developer (web) position and was given a technical task and did it completely. After that, I went through a technical review of the task with Solution Architect. During the interview, in addition to asking some software-related questions, he asked some hardware and network questions. These questions were out of scope of software development and I was rejected!
The recruiter even didn't bother himself to inform me about the result of the interview and I asked after two days personally from the Solution Architect.
They should be more clear on their requirements. The assigned task was completed and the technical guy confirmed that. But surprisingly, I was rejected for lack of hardware information!
Please respect the candidates and inform them about the result of the interview.
