Vorstellungsgespräch

HOW THEY ATTRACTED ME:
As a resident of Munich with a very strong apetite for knowing the employment market, I could easily observe the progress that Westwing has made during the past 2 years. From a start-up with volatile plans & timelines, Westwing evolved to a relatively established employer, with a medium to long term future. Currently their engineering team is increddibly large (60+), enjoys some of the best hardware budget on the market and brings in-house knowledge through regular participation in meetups and conferences. My previous colleagues that joined Westwing are sastisfied with the choice they've made and did their best to convince me to come over. My current colleagues, who were previously at Westwing, have always praised the colloquial atmosphere, the company-wide honest information sharing and, a very important point, the sharpness of the CEO.

Moreover, considering the current real estate boom in Germany, a well-built home & living company can only succeed. When you spend hundreds of thousands to buy a house (or even a few thousands for changing rents), you easily agree to invest a fraction of the costs on unique and enjoyable home & living products. Westwing has a real chance in becoming a leader for this domain, so I believe that, as long as the company stays in good hands and keeps the investors happy, it can be seen as a safe employer. We're talking here about a detail-oriented company, with strong focus on the client (0 bugs in the backlog), with an intense and well-defined mission. With these ingredients and their diverse team, all signs show they're on the right track.

THE CONTACT
The interaction with the internal recruitment team was fluent & agreeable. Compared to how external recruiters handle communication, I was more than happy to be in touch with Westwing directly, receiving an honest & clear feedback. I was contacted by them for a concrete opportunity via Linkedin, but they knew me before due to a previous interaction.

THE FIRST TECHNICAL TALK
I had met their Head of Software some time before my latest interview and had a systematic conversation with him, based on a checklist he had prepared on an A4 paper (PHP, experience with frameworks, experience with testing, OOP and so on). That part took about one hour and I was lucky enough to be joining the talks even if I was 10 minutes late (I had a good excuse, though!).

THE PROJECT TALK
As things became concrete and an appropriate position came up, I've had a relaxed chat with their Project CTO and talked about my current activities, about their future plans, about the technology stack they're using and how I could be supporting all these. There were plenty of questions and answers that I don't recall, but we mostly wanted to understand how my experience could be joined with their needs.

THE COMMUNICATION
Through all this time, the candidate-employer relation was managed in a very friendly way by Samira, who always did her best to keep me informed & interested in the opportunity.

THE OFFER
Luckily for me, the discussions ended up with an offer exactly in the terms I've requested. Unluckily, the context somehow forced me to reject the chance of joining Westwing at that time. Even after I rejected, I was nicely contacted by both the Project CTO and their HR, in sense of good will and acceptance of my decision. One in all, it seems that Westwing has put together a nice team!
