There was three rounds of interviews. The initial phone screening was with a recruiter and then a call with the hiring manager. The third round was a culture and interview with management.

I was contacted by a recruiter online, did the initial phone screen, then a first round phone interview with the marketing manager, who was very late to our phone interview. The recruiter said she would send me an assessment to complete, but never did. I tried to reach her by email and LinkedIn to ask if I’m still being considered, but I never heard back. Not even a quick status update. This has been the most frustrating experience I ever had with a recruiter, and if that’s the case, I can only imagine how they treat their employees.

The hiring process was intimidating yet welcoming. The hiring manager I had was great. The process was also long but flexible. There were a number of rounds throughout the process that allow you to meet sales directors as well as employees in other departments (cultural fit).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

I originally applied to a position at Social Tables when I was participating in another internship, but I really enjoyed my first initial phone interview. We closed the loop to say that she would circle back with me towards the end of my internship- and she did! We had a face-time interview for the second interview and I knew the vibe felt right, and so did the job. Something in my gut told me to take this opportunity. I was very impressed by the interview experience start to finish.

The process was quite strange. I spoke with a couple of folks on the team via phone before speaking with the director of engineering. While things had gone well prior to this call, I was then told the position I had been discussing didn't actually exist. Seeing as we were two minutes into our phone call, I was pretty dumfounded in searching for anything else worth discussing. I'm not sure if there is a disconnect on the team, or what is going on, but seems like they should figure out whether or not a role exists before interviewing candidates.

The interview process went as followed: submitted application, about a week or two afterwards, the hiring manager reached out to conduct a phone screen, then, I was invited for an in-person interview.

The process was good (not great nor bad). After the phone screen which was great, the rest of the process was simply good. For starters, there was a lot of back and forth regarding the in-person interview (as an HR professional this is understandable), but after about two weeks of following up, the hiring manager finally got back to me and invited me for an in-person interview. Afterwards, there was an additional 2 individuals on the email chains providing me with information regarding the in-person interview; only the day before was I provided with the interview details they said they would send to me much sooner (I suspected this was a red flag, but wanted to give the benefit of the doubt). That part was a little disorganized.

After being taken aback, by what happened above, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was still appreciative of the opportunity; the in-person interview was super long (and draining; took about 3 hours in total), but pleasant. I was ask some general (and more situational) questions regarding my HR background. I met with 6 people in total.

The cultural interview was great and I really liked the idea of meeting with other staff in different departments. I was asked to give an example of how I embodied each of their current values. Although the in-person interview turned out good, there were some additional red flags I’d noticed. One was the lack of diversity among race and age. To learn more about the organization, I read through their diversity report and the numbers were intense, there’s an extreme lack of diversity among people of color. With that being said I wanted to take into account that it’s the tech field so it comes with the territory. I asked about the diversity and what the company is currently doing to bridge the gap, and the responses from all the interviewers was very generic; I was hoping for stronger examples. You can’t expect to move the needle without concrete actions items. The diversity report is a great tool for transparency, but strategic actions could help make an additional impact. The lack of diversity in age wasn’t surprising (I did my research), but it showed a lot in the questions that were asked; the interviewers presented some scenarios in which I was asked how I would respond, but what they were presenting was potentially presenting a ‘grey area’ and blur the lines between professional/personal. Additionally, I asked about the work-life balance and there was a consistent response that gave me the impression that’s a work in progress for the company. I get when when you’re trying to do something that have never been done before, hard work and commitment are must-have qualities, but realistically one should always strive towards balances especially in terms of work/life.

Overall, the company seems good and their purpose appears to be impactful to the field in which they represent (hospitality industry). Also, the organization is interesting (their office like many others have said is beautiful). With that being I’d recommended weighing the pros and cons about their diversity and culture in general; there are many who have raved about their culture, but I wouldn’t idolize it too much. Take time to learn about organization wholistically and in it’s entirety. Let the big picture guide your decision.

The opportunity to meet with the team was very much appreciated and I wish the company the best of luck in its future endeavors.

Had an interview with the recruiter (external agency), then with hiring manager and then onsite with several team members including design, sales, HR, Chief of staff, Product Management and engineering.

My primary issue was communication. After my final set of interviews, I thought I had done well and was a good fit. When I reached out to the recruiter, the response was "I am hearing positive feedback, but let me get back when the CEO wants to talk to you". Three weeks since then and no communication. I tried to reach out twice and no response. While, I totally get that I may have been rejected, but I expect the courtesy to at least respond back to the candidate. I think the recruiting agency (foundationtalent.com) is doing a huge disservice to their client Social Tables by leaving a poor experience for the candidates. I spent an entire day and my own driving/ parking money, I think I at least deserve a response.

March 20, 2018 update - After writing this review, I did get a response from the hiring agency apologizing and explaining their reasoning.

I had a very positive experience with the interview process overall. The first step was to schedule a call with the recruiter, who was really friendly. The next step was a phone interview with a current Product Manager. Then a 2-3 hour video interview where I had to present on a product/service to 5 people (engineers/product managers/designers) which included Q&A, speak one-on-one with the VP of Product, and do a round robin style culture interview with 3 people. They gave a few days to prepare a 30-minute presentation on a product/service that I believed was revolutionary and an outline of topics I should cover. The interview with the VP of Product was very relaxed and he asked questions to get to know me as a person. The goal of the culture interview was to see how you relate to the core values of Social Tables. The final step of the interview process was a 20-minute chat with the CEO, who asked questions on why I was interested in Social Tables, how I am connected to the D.C. area, and what constructive feedback I had on their interview process. Everyone I met with in this process was extremely friendly and it was a lot of fun interviewing. They clearly put a lot of thought and effort into their hiring process and they constantly asked for feedback in order to improve their process.
