Vorstellungsgespräch

Intense interview process, but it prepares you well for the job and expectations. There is a phone screen, 1:1 with a hiring manager, presentation, and a series of interviews with members of the team.

I applied to SmartSheet after hearing good things about them as an employer. I had an initial phone screen with the recruiter, which went well but I was a little surprised they asked for my salary expectation in this first contact. That aside, I was told that it's "highly suggested" that you familiarize yourself with the product - fine, that's possible given the free trial that's offered. However, I was disappointed to discover in my in-person interview prior knowledge of the software is absolutely critical to your success in the interview, seemingly above everything else. I currently work a full-time job (and often work 50, 60+ hours a week) and didn't have the capacity to be as familiar with the product as SmartSheet wanted. If their initial onboarding/training program is as good as they touted, advanced product knowledge is unnecessary at the interview stage. (Side note: don't most companies pay you to get trained anyway?) The in-person interview consisted of meeting with three people: one getting to know you, one testing your problem solving skills (involves product knowledge) and another gauging your previous knowledge again. That said, they do cater some lunches and have nice office views and all that. People seem genuinely enthused to work there too. It's a shame the hiring process is the way that it is.

I just saw your post and I’d like to share a bit more about Smartsheet. First, I am currently working at Smartsheet. That said, I am just an employee; I have been here for about one year and do not represent HR nor am I part of any official program that responds to Glassdoor comments. I’d like to explain why our interview process emphasizes product familiarity so much. We are a company that is very focused on our product and how we help our users be successful. As such, new team members who are most successful here are ones who can quickly learn the software product, see the value of the product and see how it can serve various use cases. As such, we love candidates who are highly discerning of the product or service they are working on; whether you are supporting, selling or coding it. I have seen company cultures that are not product and customer focused and that have employees who don't understand how the products are used and the value it provides. This is one of the key reasons the Smartsheet product is intuitive, simple yet powerful. I hope this helps shed some light on our approach. Thanks for the post on Glassdoor. Good luck in your job search. --Francis Lau, Senior Director of Product Intelligence
