    Process involved some talks with management and technical staff. There is a technical challenge which basically involves creating (and presenting) an application and integrating other systems/apps with the Okta platform - it is time intensive, but it really gives you a solid idea of what you're getting into and will give you a good platform from which to build out your demo environment if you are accepted. All in all a fair interview process, but pretty time-consuming.

    I had a really great phone call with the hiring manager, and was then presenting with their technical challenge. These are pretty par for the course for Sales Engineer jobs these days, but the scope of what they asked for was laughable. They gave me two weeks to complete, but what they didn’t say was that it would take two weeks of working on it nearly full time to complete. I ran the tasks by some experienced developer friends of mine, and they laughed at how much sheer labor would be involved in completing.

    The project essentially involved standing up servers, integrating into the Okta APIs, and then creating a polished application and presenting it. This wasn't just proving understanding of core technical concepts, this was building a fully functional and complete solution, end to end.

    While the hiring manager did say they tend to hire people that complete the challenge, it was an unreasonable amount of work to ask anyone to do to prove they are capable of doing the job.

    I applied online. I received a response a few weeks later for a quick phone conversation. That went well. I then had a talk with the hiring manager which went well and was instructed to complete a couple of questions on a "Sales Engineering Challenge" worksheet. Some of it involved coding, some of it involved using Okta's product. There really wasn't much help provided in completing the assignments and much of the work I did was looking at their documentation and figuring it out from there. Some questions were pretty straightforward from reading the documentation, others were not.
    When I was ready to do a presentation on the challenges that were given to me, I had a conference call. There were five different people on the call. I thought I was just going to do a presentation and answer questions about it afterward but that wasn't the case. Immediately, I started getting questions not covered on the actual challenge I was assigned and it was assumed I knew everything about their product as well as everything about SSO and OIDC. I answered most questions as best as I could but was thrown off by the whole interview format and constant interruptions. Later on, it became evident that no one on the call except the hiring manager knew that I had been assigned specific challenges to complete. All in all, it ended up being a colossal waste of time since I had to prepare so much to do the presentation. To make matters worse, they didn't even follow up with me knowing that I put a lot of work into their challenges. I put in a lot of work recording parts of my presentation for brevity, spun up an Amazon EC2 instance to complete part of the work, and completed every challenge. Okta left a very bad impression on me.

    Process started when a recruiter reached out to me about 2 weeks after I applied for the position. First call was with the recruiter going over my background, what I knew about Okta, and my overall goals. Really straightforward and conversational.

    I then spoke to the hiring manager who dug into my background a bit more, focusing a lot on my experiences with Identity Access Mgmt. Advice here, really have a high level understanding of this concept and do your research on the company. After this call, I spoke with the recruiter and he mentioned that I would need to to a Technical Challenge in front of management. They give you about 2 weeks to complete this, I'll go into it a bit more.

    I then had another interview with another hiring manager (They are hiring SEs like crazy and really growing the team). Very similar to the first call, digging into my background. I was really honest with them and mentioned my limited exposure to IAM, that didn't seem to be a deterrent, it seems they want people that are interested in working with the product.

    One thing that was really helpful during this process was how helpful everyone was. Each person I spoke with wanted me to reach out if I had any questions. This became really important later on during the Technical Challenge.

    Once you get through the initial screenings, you are assigned a Technical Challenge. At first it was really daunting. There are 20 or so challenges, they ask you to complete a minimum of 4. Take these serious, they will not only test your technical abilities, but also show management how much you are invested in joining Okta. Focus on things you aren't real strong in, this will resonate with them and highlight your ability to learn new ideas. I invested about 40 hours into this to make sure I crushed it. Documentation is everywhere and the guide highlights where to find it. Finally, have fun with it.

    Tech challenge was great, I did a presentation and went through the items I selected. The audience consisted of the hiring manager and a few senior managers. Another interviewer mentioned the team interrupting throughout, that didn't happen. Be prepared to tell a story and do what SEs do best, explaining complex ideas in easy to follow terms.

    If you pass the tech challenge, you will most likely be asked to go to HQ to meet with a few folks that you will be working closely with plus test you to see what you actually know. My feeling, if they spend the money to send you to SF, they are interested in you. Still maintain that sense of urgency.

    Overall, the experience was amazing. I started out not knowing much about Okta to giving a demo about it to senior leaders. Take the tech challenge seriously, invest the time into it, make sure you bring your soft skills, and have fun with it.

    I had a phone call with leadership in UK to introduce ourself, after that there was a Skype meeting with Senior leadership from the US. Based on these conversations and rough exploration of benefits I was invited for 4 more short interviews in the UK with other sales leadership and other senior sales engineers. It is not easy to do these interviews, but Okta is very open in what they will expect from you and there is a open two way conversation that allows you to see if there is a fit.
