A few days after sending my resume, cover letter, and university grades, I got a phone call from one of their recruiters. We discussed my background and motivation, and how Netlight works. Some time after, I had a remote technical interview with one of their consultants where I had to answer some questions and solve problems in a code snippet. Finally, I had an in-person interview with one of their partners, discussing culture fit.

Ich habe mich auf Empfehlung eines Mitarbeiters beworben. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert bei Netlight.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

The first step was a very casual chat with HR. Second interview was a competence interview where you will be asked a bunch of questions depending on your specialty (no whiteboard/coding) and at the end they gave a task to draft some system architecture for an app on a whiteboard in 10min on your own and then explain it like your interviewers would have been customers. The third and last step was partner interview with highest level of consultant where there was general chatting and salary/benefit discussions.

Overall, all people were very friendly and seems nice environment to work at. If you are early on your career but have worked during your studies it might be difficult to get into higher levels with better salaries as in principle they start counting your work experience after graduation and in this case other places may be able to give you better offers.

    Bewerbung

    1. Coffee with a recruiter.
    2. A case interview with 2 consultants on one side, me on the other. I think this might be where people fall.
    3. Interview with a partner.

I really clicked with everyone at Netlight during the interview process, and it seems like a great company I would hands down imagine working for. The only reason I turned it down was due to getting a more specialised role within a field Netlight could not guarantee me (which is reasonable, as you can never be guaranteed specific projects at a consulting firm). I think Netlight is a great place to start if you are not sure of what you want to do and want to have general programming, software development projects. You can then slowly move to an area and specialise within what intrigues you. If you already know towards where you'd like to go, consulting (no matter IT or Management) might be an unnecessary step. I would however definitely imagine coming in later as a more specialised consultant.

The only possible downside for some might be that the culture might be a tad bit too strong at times. Some like it, some don't. Build your own opinion and ask about that on the interview if you are skeptical. I perceived it all as very honest and open during the interview - I really got the impression that they are looking for a good match for you as well, and not just treat you as another number in their books.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

They called me to know my general information and my background. Then they offered me a Skype interview . They asked questions about me and described what I will do as IT Consultant. After that, I realize that IT Consultant is a developer or programmer in my definition, so it is not suitable for me. They also required me to send again my CV with more description about the projects I did before. But I refused.

Ich habe mich online beworben. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im August 2017 bei Netlight (München, Bayern).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

Netlight has a very specific process to hire applicants.

    1. Talk with a HR member/recruiter to get to know the company, process and to see how they overlap with your career plan.
    2. Technical interview (This contains brief get to know, One coding/technical challenge and one case interview)
    3. A chat with a partner ( This is helpful to get a detailed understanding of projects at Netlight from a senior Netlighter. He/she will also check your career goals and how well it suits Netlight. )

Process was very efficient and professional. The recruiting team member helps you through the whole process.

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich über eine Hochschule oder Universität beworben. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert bei Netlight.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

It started out with a 30 min chat on the phone about myself and thoughts of how to start my career. It was friendly, to such an extent it almost felt superficial. However, I decided to play along so we scheduled an appointment for a meeting at their headquarters in Stockholm.

Their headquarters is located in one of Stockholm’s fancier areas, where they share office spaces with boutiques of super brands like Chanel and Prada. Perhaps a bit amusing, since once you get inside the building, you will feel the smell of garbage. At first glance, I didn’t realize (or I didn’t want to believe) it but the recruiter later confirmed this. Apparently it has something to do with the door to the garbage room not fully closing. I found it striking though that the odour penetrated their entire office while no one seemed to actually bother.

The process consists of three interviews: the first one being “get to know each other”, a technical interview as a second and lastly a meeting with one of the founders/partners.

During the first meeting I got a presentation of the company, how they work and what they do. It was basically a regular interview where we learned to know each other. It’s also the first time you’ll be exposed to their religious culture. I probably haven’t heard “It’s cool”, and “It’s awesome” so many times in such a short period of time - platitudes that seemed to be the cornerstones in their artificial world.

I also realized their reluctance in answering some of what they seemed think to be more difficult questions, such as; “are you going to promote me as a junior developer to your clients?”. Based on the information I could extract it seems like they’re more interested in selling, on paper, a non-junior developer, even though you probably are junior. Digging deeper, I asked if they provide technical training and the real world answer was simply no. The netlight answer was that people gather together on evenings (read: unpaid) and have wonderful seminars where they share knowledge with each other. They have paid managerial training though, which is quite ironic considering netlight is supposed to be a tech company and in a way is since that’s their main source of income. The upside is their relatively high entry salary, 35k a month (beginning of 2017), they are a young organization (I guess that comes as both good and bad) and there are possibilities to work in their offices abroad (mainly in Germany). I was also presented with their entire career ladder, where most of the salaries, pensions and paid holidays were exposed. The senior positions though were not fully transparent since only base salaries were provided, from which the negotiations begin.

The second interview, the technical one, consisted of two parts. The first was purely coding, a variant of the infamous fizzbuzz test.

In the second part I was handed a case study. I received a couple of minutes to read it through and after asking me if I had any questions the interviewers left the room for about 10 minutes, expecting me to come up and present some form of solution. I was supposed to give an idea of the architecture and of the techniques to be used.
Here is basically where my and netlight’s views began to diverge: I thought it was a purely technical assessment; however, they made it clear that I should sell more aggressively. They didn’t explicitly mention the word “sell” but from the questions they asked and the feedback I later on received it was obvious.

In the last interview the partner started out by writing some questions on the whiteboard.

The partner basically told me to get through each and every question while she was sitting quiet most of the time. At first I thought she sincerely wanted to know more about me in order to evaluate if I would be a good fit for netlight’s culture. However, the deeper we delved into the process, it became more and more obvious that she was assessing my sales skills. The closest to a technical question I was asked was to estimate the amount of hours I’ve spent coding for the companies on my resume. The interviewer didn’t have a lot of patience either when the process didn’t go the way she wanted, something that was reflected in her constant sighs.

The partner was a pure sales person and knew nothing about technology. Not-a-single-thing. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad that she also presented herself as an engineer.

By this time I was everything but enthusiastic and I’m pretty sure it shone through. I did not receive an offer.

If you really love technology and coding I would suggest to stay away from this company. There are plenty of organizations that will truly value your competencies and not force you to be a con man in order to make as much money as possible. It’s remarkable that a company having a net margin of 30% (an astounding number), keeps pushing the sales instead of focusing on what really is their core business, namely tech.
