Ich habe mich online beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 4 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im April 2014 bei King (Barcelona (Spanien)).

Vorstellungsgespräch

I applied through the king website. I got contacted by a very friendly hr representative who spoke bad English who explained to me that the process would be long and that I would have to undergo a remote interview, then I would have to develop an application and finally that I would have to go to their headquarter for an in person interview. The remote interview went well. A very friendly but, yet again, bad English speaking guy, asked me general programming questions. A few days afterwards, the hr representative contacted me telling me that the interview had gone well and she assigend me a task giving me a week to complete it. Now, the task consisted of implementing the king midas miner game using some graphics elements they provided. That is not a trivial task, especially for someone unfamiliar with the SDL, like I was. I thought they should have said beforehand that the interview would require such a big development effort. I actually considered not doing it, but since I was in the game by now, I decided to go for it. Along with the task they did not provide any guidelines (like, "use design patterns", or "make sure to adhere to certain programming paradigms"...), but they simply wrote they would look at my code structure first of all, and secondly to transitions, etc.
I worked on the task quite hard, and the game worked perfectly. Certainly, not being familiar with the SDL, my design was not as good as it could have been if I had already known such library, but it was a learning experience for me, and since king had written that the program had to be a fun way to give the interviewer a basis upon which to ask questions, I thought my program was fair enough.
Well, one week after sending my application king sent me a two line email stating they would not move forward with my application. Their decision has to be respected of course, but I find they did not respect me, by not stating clearly that even if I delivered a perfectly working program with a design that was at least decent (I have over ten years of software development experience) they might have rejected it without giving me any reason. Had I known that they had a preconceived, almost prejudicial I would say, idea of how software needs to be designed, I would not have developed the game, since I had a lot of other opportunities (which I eventually pursued).
It is my impression that at king there is a very preconceived idea of how software should be designed and developed (for example with a very heavy use of design patterns, or adhering to some programming practices whose usefulness is always up to debate of course), but that should be stated clearly in advance. Asking someone to send a program without giving any guidelines and then rejecting their work because such unknown guidelines are not respected is simply ridiculous. I am pretty happy with my current situation and with the opportunities I then decided to pursue, but I chose to write these few lines to let other software developers and perspective employers of king know how things are like when you interview with them, so other people can avoid wasting their time and ultimately maybe accepting a job in a company where people have a dogmatic, preconceived and ultimately narrow-minded concept of software development.
