First you had to send in an application form with standard questions that test whether your values align with the company's. Next was a telephone interview and this was really good as they use an external recruitment company who are really professional and help to try and get the best out of you when asking questions. If you pass the telephone interview stage, you get invited to an assessment centre so it's a really quick process! Before you go to the assessment centre you have to do a situational judgement test which is quite long, but you still get to go to the assessment centre whether you do well in it or not so it's not anything to worry about. At the assessment centre you have an initial 10-15 minutes to talk with other grads and the assessors (this is great for showing your interest and that you're a normal human being!), next was the one-on-one interview - this was the best interview I've ever had, it turned into more of a conversation than just asking questions off of a sheet so I felt very relaxed - then we did a presentation in front of one assessor each on a potential business idea that we previously had time to go through and write notes about. Finally was the group presentation where we had to plan an event together, this was difficult because you had to digest and think about a lot of information in a short space of time. Overall, I think the interview process was really quick and simple.

Vorstellungsgespräch

Took 5 months from sending in my application to attending the assessment day. The telephone interview consisted of competency based questions followed by a scenario. 'You work in the transport department for the government and you have been tasked with changing the side we drive on from the left to the right hand side of the road. What questions would you ask and what factors would you take into consideration.' They are looking for a logical approach. I felt the questions were fair and the woman conducting the interview (who does not work for Hiscox) was friendly. The assessment day was different from others I have attended. They conduct the interview CV blind, meaning the assessors have not seen your CV and do not look at it through out the day. This means that everyone is equal, however it also has some down falls which I will explain later. The morning started with a 'speed dating challenge' where you had 5mins to talk to various members of staff present, without mentioning your degree, instead you had to tell them an interesting fact about yourself. Then you were split into groups for a group exercise. It was provided by SHL so if you have the opportunity check out their site and get an understanding for the the type of exercise you may get. If you are good at maths use maths, if you are creative be creative, play to your strengths. No leader is allowed to be appointed. This task lasted an hour. Next was the interview, you were asked why Hiscox and Underwriting, when have you worked within a team. And then they gave you another scenario. You are insuring the ship and the cargo both worth £10m what factors would you take into consideration and what statics would you seek to inform your decision. They throw a few questions out like what would you do if the forecast was stormy on the day it set sail. This lasted all of 25min. At this point we had lunch. After lunch a few people did not progress to the afternoon. The afternoon was based on a single case study related to the one we did in the morning. This was a solo exercise. We were given a pack of information to analyse and then give a short presentation on our recommendations. After this you are questioned on the presentation. Then the day is over. I believe in some circumstances you may be asked for another interview after this? The overall day was positive I guess. I was disappointed that we were told at the start of the day that during our interviews were would not have the opportunity to ask questions. Also no one at Hiscox seemed to smile, they were friendly but seemed to think alot of themselves. Ultimately, they are looking for intuitive thinkers. I could have turned up having done no research on the company or insurance more generally and managed to get through the day with no problems. They want to know how you think. The day was worth it for the delicious lunch.
