    Junior Software Developer-Vorstellungsgespräch

    Anonymer Bewerber im Vorstellungsgespräch

    Negative Erfahrung

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich online beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte eine Woche. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert bei Headspring.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

I had a very odd experience. I submitted my resume online and also sent it to a hiring manager (as is my typical procedure). I got a call from HR a couple of days later to set up the initial screening. The recruiter asked the typical questions: salary expectations, why do you want to work here, etc. As for salary, I did give them a number but said it was negotiable (I am changing careers and realize that I may need to take a pay cut). She said my information would be forwarded to the hiring manager. About 2 days later, I got an email from her stating that my qualifications did not match their needs at this time. I really wanted to work at this company (at the time), and so I replied and asked if there was any other feedback from the hiring manager, so that I could improve my skills or presentation for next time. I also sent a similar email to the hiring manager I had contacted.

I got a response from neither the recruiter nor the hiring manager, but instead from the director of HR. She told me that my salary expectations were way out of line for the role and that was why I got rejected. I replied and said I really didn't want that to be the reason that I wasn't considered, and repeated that I was willing to take a pay cut for the right position. I never heard back.

All in all, it was a very strange experience that I have not experienced with any other company. I thought it was silly that they wouldn't even talk to me just because my previous salary was above their range for this position, even though I specifically said I would take a pay cut. Maybe this was a bogus reason and the real reason was something else...I don't know. It didn't leave me with a great impression of this company though and now I think I'm better off not working there.

They got back at me within two weeks
I got a call from HR and the initial screening was simple
from there I had five days to complete an assignment and present it to them.
I thought i did well but they did not get back to me.
They wont tell you where you messed up, it would have been nice to know why I lost the opportunity to work at their company

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich online beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 2 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im März 2017 bei Headspring (Austin, TX (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

Pretty standard fare. Started with a phone screening with the HR/Office Manager. Then proceeded to a phone interview with the Lead PM. After that, I was given a skills task where I had to create a project plan slide deck and presentation for a pretend client. I was given a week to prepare - very reasonable.

Onsite interview started ~20 minutes late; it's an agency, stuff happens. I was scheduled to do my presentation first to three PMs, then have regular interviews with two more groups of three different employees. Whole process would have taken ~2.5 hours. At the time, I thought I did better than I anticipated with the presentation, but since then I got my PMI-ACP cert and I can see a lot of holes in it. Which brings me to the point in the interview I thought was rather cheeky.

After my presentation and very reasonable interview questions, the group said their pleasantries and went to get the second group. I waited for a few minutes, then the lead PM came back, by himself, and said there was some sort of emergency with one of their clients and that the interview had to be cut short. He assured me that I would be contacted in a couple of days to schedule phone interviews with the rest of the team, said some pleasantries, and escorted me out. Two days later, I still heard nothing, so I emailed to find out if the phone interviews were to happen soon? A few hours later, the lead PM called me and said that they were going to pursue other candidates. Okay, that's perfectly reasonable.

What left me with a sour taste, however, was the apparent ruse with the "emergency client scenario." If they did not think I was a good fit, I should have been told while I was at the onsite, rather than string me along with a perceived ruse. Would have I been contacted had I not emailed them after a couple of days? I would imagine, no, hoping that I would have just faded away. At least this is the perception I got after the whole scenario played out. Not good form.

The people I met were smart and nice, except for the end shenanigans part. Because of this, even as my skill-sets grow, I would not consider applying to this company in the future. If they are willing to play these games with potential candidates, what are they willing to play with its employees?

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich über einen Personalvermittler beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 2 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im März 2014 bei Headspring (Sam Houston, TX (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

Fairly straight forward, couple calls from VP then the recruiter, then live code test with a technical consultant. then not sure what next.

    Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch

    • Questions are fairly easy, if you really know things, here are completed set of all questions I get:
      1) Create a program to display numbers between 1-100, but if the number is divisible by 3, print 'fizz' if divisible by 5, print 'buzz'. If divisible by both 3 &5 print 'fizz buzz'
      2) Create reusable library (DLL) for the code above and write code to use that library
      3) Instead of printing hardcode numbers 1-100, and fizz/buzz, allow user to specify those parameters whichever way they like
      4) Modify the code to return some sort of indication if they specify invalid range such as 100-1 instead of 1-100
      5) write unit test for this program (I didn't answer this one, cuz I have never use it)
      6) Modify the code so that it can handle any condition for example what if user specified range from 1billion to 10billions. (not quite sure what interviewer wanted me to do on this at all)

--Most difficult part? not really I was having fun, the interviewer made me feel like he was very happy with my code, but it was a total fake, he I turned around a gave me a negative assessment LOL for couple not really that important questions #5-6, may be because I was interviewed for a 6-digit salary and not a junior or mid level so he expected a whole lot more??? That is alright I wasn't looking for job at the time, HeadSpring VP contacted me first via LinkedIn and I thought why not give it a try, if I get it....great! otherwise, life goes on! so hope this helps to whoever next!   3 Antworten

Friendly. The interviewers were easy going. A lot of the director's questions were about specific examples of experiences during my career. There were a couple of technical questions about design, and about a particular library I referred to. Everything seemed positive, there was no negative feedback provided during the interview. The closing statements by the interviewers were misleading in tone and ambiguous in content - perhaps this is normal.

Starts off with initial 30 min HR Screening where they ask your salary requirements, general educational and technical background. A 45 min live code session follows where you basically write live code on a general problem. You are sharing your screen with a Senior developer at Headspring and talking at the same time while writing code. I was given two logic and behavioral assessments prior to getting an on-site interview. For me onsite interview was quite relaxing and did not involve many technical questions. The interview lasted 2 hours where in the first 30 mins you teach something you know (a skill or anything), followed by an hour long interview where you basically talk about one of your previous projects.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

About 6 interviews/meetings. 1st interview with a recruiter for an initial conversation to know what was my interest and current and desired salary. 2nd interview with the director of engineering to discuss the requirements of a project. Had a week to develop the project and then present it to the director of engineering and vice-president of operations in a 3rd interview. During the presentation live coding was a requirement and detailed explanation about what was done. A 4th interview to discuss additional topics like future interests, what I've done in the last years, projects worked, current role and responsibilities in the current employment, etc. Next 5th interview was presential in the offices of Dallas, TX. Company paid for the flight and offered me options (support) for staying and transportation. The office is great and located in a great building in Addison, TX. During the presential interview, I was required to discuss with the director of engineering a topic that passionate me during 30 minutes, another 1 hour for dicussing projects I have worked on in my last years in a more technical discussion. 30 mins were provided to ask questions. Just few minutes after leaving the office, two recruiters called me to discuss the position that I qualify and the possible salary. Two days later I talked to the vice president, director of engineering, and recruiters for a formal offer. Few hours later I received the formal letter. It was an amazing and constructive experience.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

A good interview that quizzed me about my knowledge and gauging my emotional intelligence, along with a review of my LinkedIn profile (with recommendations and endorsements), a review of my resume, and a reference check could have verified my knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position. However, rather than do that, I was given a brief interview (very brief from the perspective of learning more about me and my qualifications), and then asked to complete what amounted to a "homework assignment" that felt more like something for a college student completing an end-of-semester project.

The project would have required many hours of effort (at least 5-10 hours if done correctly)--all before we even had a discussion about salary to ensure that we were aligned. I may be an exception rather than the norm, but it seems the company is filtering candidates not willing to go to that effort at that stage in the process. The question that must be answered is if they are effectively filtering candidates that are just not eager enough to make that time commitment, or if they are only considering candidates willing and desperate enough to jump through those hoops.

I think the company is solid and I am certain I would have done a great job there, but that process just didn't align well with me. I would be very frustrated if requirements of the job also made me have to waste time rather than contribute effectively and efficiently. Others may have a different opinion of the process; but that's my take. I was pretty sure I was eliminating myself from consideration, but as diplomatically as possible I let them know that I would only want to complete the assignment with the utmost of professionalism and that there would be too much time commitment required to do so at that stage of the application process.
