All in all it was a smooth process taking ~2 months from start to finish.

    I applied through an employee referral. The process took a little over 3 weeks. I interviewed at Contentful in San Francisco, CA in November 2019.

    Every interviewer involved was completely engaged in each interview which added to the great experience. The lead recruiter managed the entire process end to end with professionalism. Overall, I had a phone screen, a couple zoom calls, and one onsite consisting of three 1:1s and an additional 45 minute block to present to the team a slide deck centered around CS. It was easy to make the decision to join the team after meeting the team and learning more about the future and vision of the company.

    Started with a phone screen with a recruiter followed by a call with my would be manager. After that call, I was invited onsite and spent about 3.5 hours meeting with would be colleagues. After this onsite, the recruiter mentioned I would have a final call with the current director and after that call I received an offer.

    Great experience overall. The process started with an intro call with a recruiter followed by a couple video calls with team managers. From there, I had some additional video calls with the operations manager and team director. Finally, they invited me to an onsite interview where I got a chance to meet different team members in person. The chats were more conversational in nature and it was a good way to get a better feel on what it would be like working at Contentful.

    Everyone I spoke with was very professional and friendly and I appreciated that they were all transparent about the realities of working at Contentful and not being overly salesy.

    The interview process started in July 31st and I had my last interview the 10th of September. After all of this, they never got back to me.

    The interview process is divided into 5 interviews.

    - 2 calls (1 with a freelance recruiter 2 with a person in the team)
    - 2 online calls (with your direct manager and another with the head of department);
    - 5 hours ON-SITE interview with 5 different people including a presentation in front of 6 people.

    I believe Contentful can be overwhelmed with the communication process, however this should never happen to a sophisticated, progressive employer. Obviously, if someone is going through the effort of preparing for a long interview process, plus an onsite interview that lasts a total of 5 hours; they deserve some idea of their likelihood of receiving an offer, even if the news is negative.

    But you know what they say... An employer’s reputation is at stake because the way an organization handles applicants is perceived as a reflection of how it treats its employees.

    My interview process consisted of a recruiter screen, 1-1 with the Director of Customer Success, 1-1 with the CS team lead, 4 hour on-site interview in Berlin, and a 1-1 with the VP of Customer Success.

    Pros: Contentful has some fantastic people in this company; friendly, honest, intelligent, and eclectic. I spoke to people from a myriad of ethnic and professional backgrounds; certainly respectable for a startup! All my conversations were engaging and natural. I would still gladly welcome the opportunity to work with the company because of how well I got along with the people.

    Cons: The initial recruiter screen was with an external recruiting consultant who was slow & unresponsive throughout the entire process. I was luckily handed off to a senior recruiter mid-interviews which made the process much smoother.

    As with any startup, growth pains and lack of direction are evident here. I was misguided with false hope after my initial rejection that would be near-future openings that I would be considered for. However, after two attempts, these both didn't pan out for various reasons. I recognize startups are faced with the challenge of headcount predictions and have needs that are perpetually in-flux, but as an interviewing candidate on the other side, it is certainly unsettling to have your hopes rise and fall multiple times.

    Quite a long, intense recruitment process but I found it quite impressive & a good reflection of the company itself, given they dedicate so much time to hiring the right people.
    I had three video interviews before being invited for an 'on-site' half day, where I was given a challenge and had a few days to prepare a 20 min presentation on the given topics. Afterward 40 mins were dedicated to Q&A/discussion, followed by another 3 x 45 min interviews that were more 'chemistry' interviews rather than hard hitting interview questions.
    Everyone I spoke to were professional and lovely- the HR team extremely well organized- I even got an email from the recruiter who set up my on-site day informing me she was off sick that day, giving me an alternate contact and detailed explanation of what to expect on arrival.
    I was thoroughly impressed throughout the entire process and accepted the offer without hesitation as a result.

    I applied online and a few days later somebody from a third party recruitment company emailed back asking to set up a first phone interview. I noticed in her email signature that the company was different to Contentful, but it was not clear why. I researched the name of the new company on LinkedIn and noticed that they were providing a recruitment-as-a-service platform, where companies could basically outsource their Recruiting. So a third-party recruiter called me on the set date and we managed to have the worst phone-screening interview I ever had. "She" sounded like a female human, however she acted and spoke like a robot. Talking EXTREMELY fast and with barely no break between words, as if someone was running her to the ground, she started firing questions away. She had a list of questions that she asked, in a specific order and she was also writing my answers down. From the first second to the last, it was an interrogation and nothing else, a completely one-way discussion, where I barely managed to ask two questions: where is she working exactly and why? and what are the next steps. Mind you, she did not provide an intelligible answer to my first question. Had I not researched the company before, I would have not understood what the business model was and what she was doing for Contentful. Prompted by her 1000-words/minute speech, I also started talking faster than normal, so from the outside it must have sounded very funny, as if it were a contest on who can say the most English business words per minute. All show and no substance.

    The interview lasted precisely 30 minutes, if I had had additional questions, tough for me. She had zero interest in me as a human candidate. I was only a little square in an excel file that she needed to fill in. Standard questions were asked. I could have just emailed her my answers, really, that's how dry and mechanical the interaction was.
    At the end she mentioned she would get back to me at the end of the week. Of course she didn't. I had to do a follow-up the next week, when she answered quite quickly and then set up a next interview for me with the hiring manager.

    The second interview was miles better than the first one only from the fact that the person I was talking to was clearly human. He was a middle-aged, very serious and down-to-business guy, who spoke in a normal cadence and also allowed me to ask some questions. We didn't have a good rapport, I could feel it from the first 10 minutes, but that happens sometimes. He said 'HR' (the recruitment agency) would get back to me within the week. You guessed it, she didn't do that. I didn't follow-up because I knew I would not be selected to go to the final round. Something funny happened afterwards though. The talking robot from the recruitment agency sent me a mass message on LinkedIn, inviting me to some event that their company was organizing. Hahahahaha. That was about 2 weeks later, when no feedback had been given. I took the chance and asked her innocently if she had any response regarding my application and she said she would look it up. She then sent me an automated rejection email, stating at the end that feedback will be provided on request. I asked for feedback just to see what happens. Of course I did not receive anything back.

    All in all, I will never apply to this company again. Or at least not until they ditch the fast-talking robots. I can't believe they actually pay for services of that quality, what a joke!
