Bewerbung

Ich habe mich über eine Hochschule oder Universität beworben. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert bei Capital One.

Vorstellungsgespräch

Behavioral -> Case -> Technical
I think the interviewers were professional and made the process go very smoothly. The most challenging part is the case interview since it is the only one you cant really study for.

    Bewerbung

Ich habe mich über einen Personalvermittler beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 2 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im Juli 2020 bei Capital One (Boston, MA (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

    Round1: Phone interview with a recruiter/HR.
Round2: An online, automated, assessment via Hacker Rank.
Round3: A three hour interview with three different people, back to back via Zoom. No break.
Round4: An interview with a manager via Zoom.
It was awful. I withdrew my application. For round 3 they send an email saying your interview could be any time between 9:00AM and 5:00pm. They send you another email the day before the interview of what exact time it is. Who thought 3 hours of back to back interviews was a good idea? I didn't get a break. The fourth interview was supposed to happen the same day round 3 but the interviewer rescheduled and I wasn't notified.

Capital One recruiter has a tendency to ghost on potential candidates if they are not interested.
At first, the recruiter calls you and asks you to take a coding challenge.
Two coding challenges are presented through HackerRank.

Also, the recruiter/HR is very helpful on how the interview will be if they are interested in you. They have a guideline on what to expect.
Due to the Covid-19 Situation, the final interview is completed on a Zoom Video Conference application rather than onsite. Four interviews that consists of two technical tests, behavorial, and a case interview. All four interviews are 45 minutes long. Due to employees working from home, one interviewer made the interview a little bit difficult to concentrate, listening to a screaming kid from the background.

One technical interview has leet code questions and the other technical question is supposed to be a white board question. But due to the interview not being onsite, the interview was more about my resume/technical background.

Behavorial interviewer asks 3 questions. Interviewer expects about 12 - 15 minute length answers using the STAR format.

Most were easy to talk to except one who seemed agitated.
Overall, they were nice, but deceptive.

Ich habe mich persönlich beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 3 Tage. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im April 2020 bei Capital One (McLean, VA (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

Initially there is a hacker rank coding quiz which consisted of two questions testing your problem solving abilities. However, after passing the quiz, I had an interview with a hiring manager that I can only describe as bizarre. The questions raised some red flags for me and even if I had received an offer, I would have declined it. I have serious concerns about Capital One management if this interview is indicative of the software engineering management team.

Applied online. Got a phone call from a recruiter with super basic questions about my work eligibility status, why I want a new job. Did a code round online (2 hacker rank questions) then went to onsite interview they call a power day (4 interviews 45 min each) and then they followed up 2 days later with a result.

    Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch

    • Q1: Bunch of standard behavioral questions. Talk about a time when... questions.

Q2: Case question: Capital One acquired an online bank IGN. What are the business/tech benefits of this acquisition? What are the challenges? They asked me to walk through a snippet of code and determine what it was doing. It was a function to determine "eligibility" for an offer to customers. 3 Variables into a function that had a bunch of cascading if/else statements - some were redundant. You need to make a truth table to figure it out. Then analyze the output of the truth table and refactor the code into a few lines.

Q3/Q4: Technical background questions. They asked me mostly about my background and the things on my resume. Then quizzed me on questions like - what would you do if you had this table and wanted to get the second-highest value in this column how would you write the query? You have data in s3 file how do you update some of the values in s3 efficiently? How do you deal with spark driver-worker memory? What is a DAG in spark? Difference between GroupByKey and ReduceByKey? My interviewer said she tried to be a data scientist but it was "too hard" and then asked me DS algorithm questions which I answered to a level of detail she probably didn't have the knowledge on and she seemed impressed. She asked me about gradient boosting, how to tune an algorithm, what my favorite algorithm was. Asked me about SQL window function if I ever used one.

I was pretty surprised I didn't get an offer because I answered almost all questions with good level of technical knowledge but if you go on Reddit and search for the capital one you'll find out they are a "fake" tech company and they've rejected plenty of candidates that got offers from real tech companies. They are looking for people who will drink the cool-aid. I asked my interviewer where they are in terms of automated deployments and he said they have a good portion of manual deployment and people doing SQL updates/inserts as a process. That sounds like a "real" tech company to me!   Frage beantworten

    Bewerbung

Capital One flew me out to the Richmond campus the night before, and then I went over to the campus the morning after for my interview. It consisted of three parts, the case, the behavioral, and the technical. The case was as described by many other posts on here, the behavioral was a very standard tech behavioral, and the technical was also very standard.

    Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch

    • In the behavioral, they asked very simple "Tell me about a time..." questions. Just have a few stories ready and be ready to present them in the STAR format.   Frage beantworten

Ich habe mich online beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 2 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im Januar 2020 bei Capital One (New York, NY (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

Initial phone screening done by a recruiter, who also asks very basic technical questions at the end. From there, a hacker rank test is scheduled with 2 problems. You are given 36 hours to do so. The hacker rank questions were 1 fairly easy problem, and 1 moderately difficult problem. Both have time constraints for large file sizes so unless you write high performing code, you will not pass all test cases. I did not pass all 12/12 for each one, however, they still informed me that I passed. From there, I was scheduled to an on site interview.

On site interview consists of 4 1-on-1 interviews, lasting each an hour, for a total of 4 hours. There are two technical. The first one was all algorithms. STUDY YOUR 'CRACKING THE CODING INTERVIEW' BOOK! The examples come out of this book! I was given two questions to write out on a whiteboard. The second interview was behavioral. You are given 3 broad questions that you are expected to give roughly a 10 minute answer for in STAR format. 'Tell me about a time x happened' and how did you resolve it'. They are looking for team players, people who are open, and most importantly, someone they can identify with. I was asked a lot of follow up questions about the real life stories I was giving. You should practice telling these stories and be ready to really sell how you overcame the issue, and how it made you and/or your team better. Ten minutes gives you plenty of time to provide a lot of context and detail, the interviewer wants to relate to you! The third interview was another technical interview. This one was more explain the architecture you worked with in depth. There were a lot of questions that the interviewer just wanted to hear you talk through technically. I believed this was just to get a judgement/feeling of how comfortable/confident you were being able to explain technologies and demonstrate understanding. I was also asked to whiteboard out basic architectural strategy for implementing certain classes. The fourth interview was a case study. This one is important! The case study has no WRONG ANSWERS! Don't overthink it, just ask QUESTIONS! I asked questions endlessly until we had figured out everything that there was to it. It's not meant to be difficult, and it's not meant to overthink, there is no trick either. It's simple engineering. Find out the problems, assess why things were done a certain way, offer solutions etc. I was also given a paper with terribly written code on it, and was asked to clean it up as much as I could.

The interviewers were all incredibly friendly, professional, intelligent, relatable, and most importantly, they helped you along and made you feel comfortable. None of the interviewers were ever condescending which is something I have found time and time again. If you get stuck, they are there to give you hints and help you a long. Even in my code I made a few small mistakes, but when they pointed them out, I was able to clean them up immediately. This really helped my pre-interview anxiety. At no point did I feel uncomfortable, and they also did not ask text book questions, or expected perfect syntax. The interview process from start to finish was well done, and the best that I have been a part of. They truly want to assess the power of your brain, creativity, understanding, and your personality. This may weed out some higher level technical coders that may be poor communicators, but that is there prerogative.

I received an offer the following day. Overall, the interview wasn't difficult, but I think the interviewers have a great sense of who is BS'ing them and who truly knows what they are doing. READ YOUR BOOK! Practice case studies. Practice reciting behavioral questions in the mirror.
