Ich habe mich über einen Personalvermittler beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte eine Woche. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert bei Brightedge Technologies.

Vorstellungsgespräch

I wasn't looking to change jobs but one of BrightEdge's internal recruiters contacted me via LinkedIn. I had a good conversation with him and thought the position sounded interesting, even though it was a slight departure from my career path thus far and my current job. The recruiter gave me some details, and I agreed to a phone interview with a manager.

Before the interview, I did some recon and got mixed reviews... One current employee told me that the technology was great and she liked her job, but another friend and former co-worker found the culture "weird" and "hyper-competitive." I also heard references to “drinking the Kool-Aid,” and was told that the office is like a glorified call center. It was nothing I hadn't encountered elsewhere in the tech/startup world but still, it was enough to give me pause.

So I went into the interview cautious but interested. The interviewer seemed a little rushed but was nice enough. She asked me some generic questions (describe your background, what's your career plan, etc.), and I asked her some (what are you looking for in an ideal candidate, etc.). After the interview, via email she wished me “good luck with the rest of the process,” which I took to mean that there would be some more, you know, process.

I have great credentials and people skills, plus more experience than necessary to do well in this type of position, but I didn’t give my “hard sell,” given what I’d read and heard, and the fact that they'd contacted me. That said, I felt the call went at least well enough to justify another phone interview so I was surprised when the recruiter contacted me the following week saying that the team had decided not to move forward.

But while I was annoyed to be summarily dismissed after a single phone interview, what really ticked me off was that the recruiter ignored my email asking for insight as to the team’s reasoning. I expected a canned answer but I didn’t expect radio silence -- that’s just bad manners.

I’m pretty sure I dodged a bullet but wow, what a waste of time.

Fragen im Vorstellungsgespräch

  • I was surprised to be asked why I had applied to work there when they were the ones who contacted me, but other than that, it was pretty standard fare.

I originally received a prep email with links to interview case study advice and samples so I suppose I would've had to answer some sort of hypothetical, had I moved on in the interview process.   Frage beantworten

Had a series of phone interviews (about 4 or 5) with different senior staff members before being brought for a day of several in-person interviews at their office in San Mateo (I'm East Coast based and the company paid for the expenses). The interviews were challenging but not unnecessarily so and covered a range of questions involving case questions, personality and career plan questions, and familiarity and comfort with the job responsibilities. The staff were very intelligent and friendly and I found the overall experience extremely positive. The job offer was generous and even though the firm wanted to hire quickly (as it was expanding rapidly), I secured a month to make a decision.

The decision was based on the fact that the opportunities another job offer provided aligned more closely with my long-term career objectives.

I applied online for the position with BrightEdge and was contacted relatively quickly, via email, to set up what amounted to an initial phone screen. After about a 20 minute conversation I was told that they would like to schedule a follow-up call with the hiring manager, which took place about a week later. That call last approximately 30 minutes with some pretty standard inteveiw questions regarding my background, how I got interested in BrightEdge and a question or two like 'Tell me about sommething amazing you have done to delight a customer?'. About a week and a half to two weeks later I was invited in for an onsight interview.

The onsite interview was almost like a more detailed extension of my second phone interview and I was able to speak to the hiring manager (for the second time), the head recruiter and someone in the CSM postition. All very straight forward very fair, all though I was pretty well tripped up by a 'math problem', representative of a customer inquiry, that I wasn't completely ready for.

About two weeks passed before I was contacted by BrightEdge, they definitely apologized for having taken so long to bget back, and I was asked to come in for a second on site interview. At this point, for various reasons, I declined the opportunity to move forward in the interview process.

Obviously I was never got to the point of a job offer, but I like to think I was close (I am supporting my own ego here more than anything). Prior to the interview I had read all of the nightmare stories here on glassdoor and I brought this up with each of the people I interviewed with. They were very open about it. Admitted to errors in their past, and I truly, truly believe that they are taking measures to address these issues, change their processes in the future. That said its a start up and there is no doubt that working at a rapidly growing company can be a grind with long hours that at times will seem overwhelming and probably unfair. To their credit, the people that I spoke with didn't hide from this either.

For me, I am willing to take on this type of workload, for the right type of job/position. Unfortunately, at this point in my career, this isn't the type of position I am willing to dedicate the kind of time and energy required.

2 Phone Screens. The first phone screen went very well and the interviewer was informed about the company and asked Pertinent questions about my experience. The second phone screen was a joke.. I felt this individual was not aware of what the positon required and it was a waste of my time.

After submitting my resume, I was given a short phone interview with HR. Then, I had a 30 minute phone interview with the managing director talking about the position and a few questions about my resume.

I was emailed for an onsite interview and told there would be case questions.

About a week and a half later, I flew to SF from LA and went to the interview. I was asked to arrive 15 minutes early so the interview could start on-time. I had five 30 minute interviews with people who work in the department and the VP who oversees the department.

Then, the HR manager came in and gave me the process for the next steps.

A phone interview with a recruiter, then another with the hiring manager. There was a gap between the first contact with the recruiter and the phone interview with the recruiter. 1:1 site interviews with 4 senior managers, including the hiring manager. All four gave simple case exercises that took no more than 5 minutes to answer.

I connected with the internal recruiter via LinkedIn after applying online for the job. She was happy to make the connection and after a few emails back and forth we scheduled a phone interview for the following Monday. We had a great conversation that lasted about 45 minutes; she was lovely to speak with. We left off that she was going to speak with hiring manager regarding next steps and would get back to me by Wednesday or Thursday of that same week. Both days came and went with no information. I emailed her; got no response. The next week I signed onto LinkedIn only to see in my feed that she had a new job that started that very day! I reached out to her but got no response. I then emailed the head of HR at Brightedge explaining the situation and as expected, got no response. I emailed again; nothing. I tried calling to get an answer. Stonewalled. Obviously I moved on but what stood out to me was how POORLY this was handled. You mean to tell me that no one in that department was taking over her work or candidates?? Even if I wasn't getting moved to next steps how about being professional and showing a sense of integrity and reaching out to the people she had been speaking with regarding open positions. In the long run, I realized I'm better off because it's things like this that are just a small window into how a company operates and treats people. I dodged a bullet.

A number of phone interviews along with in-person interviews with the team, and 1 meet and greet/interview with the VP. Personality and brain teaser questions. Just what you would expect. It was a fairly long interview process from the phone screen to the final meet and greet with the VP, taking a little over 2 months to get there. I was excited to have gotten far enough to meet the VP, however The VP was extremely rude during the interview. He yawned constantly and loudly with no shame and seemed to have been paying little or no attention span during my interview, seeming incredibly uninterested. I had never been in an interview where I felt so disrespected. I almost had to question whether the final part of the interview was a stress test or not. Prior to that experience, my interactions with the rest of the team were good. Their interview questions were overall great practice for interviewing for other companies, but I just can't get over how rude and unprofessional the VP was during that interview... It left a sour taste for me.
