Bewerbung

Ich habe mich über einen Personalvermittler beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte mehr als 4 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im Juli 2018 bei Box (Redwood City, CA (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

Vorstellungsgespräch

tl;dr: Overall a positive experience. No offer but could consider applying again in the future for a different role.

Phone screen: Decent coding problem. I had not seen the problem before but was able to code it up without too much trouble. Followed by object modeling problem for software design.

Onsite:

The good:

1. The whole interview process felt more like a discussion. Something I might do on a day-to-day basis at work. I really enjoyed the experience, especially since I was interviewing after more than a decade.
2. They had a good mix of coding and system design rounds.
3. They had a 2 hour live coding round that I really enjoyed. I only wish we had started it right away instead of the first 20 mins or so being spent with the interviewer talking about the team, project, etc., so I had gotten some more time to work on the problem.
4. The recruiter was available throughout the process to answer any questions I had.
5. The hiring manager was good to talk to and answered all my questions.
6. There was no HR round with subjective questions.

The bad:

1. It appears each interviewer is designated to ask a particular question (for every person they interview; that's the impression I got speaking with the lunch interviewer) and they have a very specific answer in mind. If you deviate from their answer, even if you solve the problem (optimally) points are potentially deducted.
2. I had an object modeling round where I had to also code up in the white-board a scheduling algorithm for the defined multi-agent system. I went with an approach that I believe was optimal, would scale very easily and came from my distributed systems background. While I explained the approach to the interviewer I believe he had something else in mind. It is possible I lost points here due to my solution not aligning with what the interviewer might have had in mind.

The neutral:

1. They have a live coding round of 2 hours where you get roughly 70-80 mins to design and code up a software that does some sort of data processing (cannot reveal due to NDA). I think this is a great way to interview people and I really enjoyed this round. My solution was near optimal but definitely not the optimal one. While I did explain to the interviewer during the code review the optimal approach that I would implement if I had more time, I believe I lost points here.
2. They do not necessarily look for candidates with ability to learn new things fast, rather they appear to want candidates with ability to solve problems in a quick and specific way. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and in fact could be working out very well for the company/team, but it does not agree with my philosophy on software engineering. I should mention that this may (or may not) vary across teams within the company.
3. They have been looking to fill this position for some time and it appears they want a developer (with some system design experience) who can code with very little to no errors in one go, rather than a software architect (who can also code). This appears to deviate from the job description and the impression I got from the recruiter and hiring manager, which seemed to indicate the desirable candidate basically having a solid background in large-scale distributed systems with related successful projects, who could come in and possibly drive the future direction of the product, rather than being an off-the-shelf code-monkey.

Summary: In general, Box seems to be a good place to work. They have industry-standard compensation (sometimes even better), good benefits and the people I spoke to seemed to enjoy their jobs. At some point later in my career I could consider applying again for a different role.

The recruiters are very nice people. Proactive, friendly and making sure that they support you with everything throughout the process. Overall vibe in the office was very positive and I really wanted to work there.

Until I met a jerk in my interview.

They wrote down some problem on the white board without telling clearly about the environment or setup or what were they even expecting me to do. So I drove things, which just might be what they maybe looking for.

During our discussion, at a point, this person literally cut me and ranted for 2 minutes in an angry and condescending tone, only to realize that I was going to say the same thing. Throughout the rest of the interview, I had racing pulse because of the hostility I was subjected to. This person had been a long timer there and speaking with other people on the interview loop, it was pretty clear that this person has had a history of being brash and a bully. If it were not for a referral from my friend who I trust for their recommendations, I'd have walked out right after the round was over.

The biggest positive was the people acknowledging it without excuse. The biggest negative was this engineer behaving like this after such a long tenure at the company. I just shiver at the thought of their behavior with junior folks, if they are behaving like this with someone being hired at similar level.

Sometimes people are so weak that they need to exercise all of this to feel powerful.

Nevertheless, I would still recommend the company because of how contrasting my experience was outside of the interaction with this person.

Advice to recruitment and management: please fix your culture and deal with bullies more strongly. The fact that this person has been doing so for such a long time is a huge red flag on you.

    Vorstellungsgespräch

Recruiter contacted through LinkedIn. Initial recruiter call where the roles and teams were explained. Then initial phone screen. After clearing that, was called for onsite. Recruiter was very helpful and called to give an idea about what to expect in the onsite interview. 6 hours onsite consisted of OO question, detailed questions about past projects, lunch, white board coding and 2 hour coding question on laptop.

Ich habe mich über einen Personalvermittler beworben. Der Vorgang dauerte 6 Wochen. Vorstellungsgespräch absolviert im September 2016 bei Box (Redwood City, CA (Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika)).

    Vorstellungsgespräch

    Recruiter contacted me on LinkedIn.
    Process took around 6 weeks.
Be well prepared with algorithms and overall coding in your favorite language. Basic data structures and algorithms which are most useful (at least for this interview) were stack and hash table.
Secondly make sure that you understand the role they are hiring for. Talk about how that interests you and what value can you add.
Overall interviewers were very good. Make sure that you keep talking (loud thinking). Take appropriate hints from interviewers.

The interview process was well coordinated. After a phone screen I was brought onsite. The recruiter called me ahead of time to let me know what to expect which was very helpful. The interviewers were all very nice. The offer was made very quickly after the interview. Overall it was a very pleasant experience.

Very professional. Nice people, and smooth process. Had a chance to talk to several people after the on-site which went well, including VP of Engineering and also the CEO. I had several competing offers and they matched several times during the process.

Started off well. But the on-site interview is totally mismanaged. The interviewers need to be trained properly. One of the engineers was incomprehensible. Couldnt even understand his name. Very bad attitude and insensitive. No idea how communication happens on daily basis. Recruiters are disrespectful at best. Waste of time! Don't fall for so called cool culture and high salary. Not worthy.
