Ich habe für mehr als 5 Jahre bei Zayed University gearbeitet - Vollzeit

    Pros

It's probably one of the best university's to work for in the UAE. Lots of time off, students really nice

    Kontras

not much respect for faculty, treated like kids. too too too easy on the students, allowing them make up sessions whenever they want etc. many changes make zero sense

    Rat an das Management

Ich habe für mehr als 8 Jahre bei Zayed University gearbeitet - Vollzeit

    Pros

    - Colleagues were wonderful and most students as well - Benefits were fine overall but housing allowance needs to be adjusted to the market

    Kontras

I used to love working at ZU but things went downhill quickly with a change in leadership occurred. The administration is totally detached from faculty and what's happening on a daily basis in the class rooms and the colleges. Teaching load kept increasing as well as research expectations and admin obligations, leaving no room for serious scholarship (maybe a way to keep people there since it becomes more and more... difficult to get employed somewhere else after working here). The administration has created an environment of fear, threat and anxiety which leads to a quick turnover in faculty, but no one seems to notice or care. People with zero admin experience are placed in positions (e.g. Associate Dean and Dean) where they are literally ruining entire colleges making people resign coz they cannot take the extremely unprofessional, unprecedented and unacceptable behavior anymore. The management doesn't do anything to support faculty, so it feels more like a trench war between faculty and management. It cannot be that management actually lies to its faculty (even the occasional pay rise does not make this morally right). Faculty should be treated like serious scholars and be trusted as any adult should be trusted. At times it felt, as if we were controlled/punished like students. The idea of punishment is what management appears to be advocating which is ludicrous in a university; a university that could be really great!

    - Transparency, honesty and integrity are needed desperately - Respect your faculty (they are after all human beings!) and take them seriously - The environment of fear is not helping anyone, especially not in retaining good people (the turnover of faculty should raise eyebrows) - Decrease course load for faculty if you want high quality research output and a good, positive working environment - Hire people in... admin positions who are actually experienced, professional, honest and respectful

    Pros

Many pros earlier. Not any more. Things have just gone downhill after change of management few years ago.

    Kontras

I worked there for 9 plus years. Earlier with the old management ZU was a fun place to be. The bosses has empathy and everyone used to happy. However with the top management recruiting less experienced leaders and wide spread nepotism, the experience was an environment of fear, threats and intimidation. Nepotism is wide spread especially at senior levels. I hear Work enviorment is stressful and depressing with many... old employees let go with just a months notice. For an expat wrapping up 20 years of your life in a month when kids in school or colleges is an impossible task. Mgmt needs to have empathy. Many were cheated off their legal dues when end of service was calculated contrary to UAE labor law. All ways to show savings to the govt and cheating old employees. Shame!!

Ich habe bei Zayed University gearbeitet - Vollzeit

    Pros

Salary is on time (so far). Bathrooms are clean. Country is interesting.

    Kontras

Lucky to escape as I've heard from former colleagues still trapped there that the place is only getting worse. I am sure almost all the positive reviews here are fake. Look at the brevity and halting English of those positive reviews and do the math. I'm sorry but only losers apply and take jobs at ZU because they cannot find anything anywhere else. At ZU, faculty are slaves to be ordered around like sheep. Rules... are imposed on faculty that are senseless but serve to remind you of your subordinate status at all times. You are powerless. You will be surveilled. You will be subjugated. You will accept your status as little higher than a maid with a PhD. Welcome to ZU!

    Rat an das Management

The American provost has no power, she's just a figurehead on her way out. And then they will get a new American figurehead to replace her. The VP, CAO, CFO and other "hidden" top administrators, who are all Emirati, or married to one, are the real power brokers in the university, and they micro-manage and squeeze the faculty tighter every year. They will never change, and the supposed government ministry oversight... is just as foolish and hidebound.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 5 Jahren bei Zayed University -

    Pros

salary, medical insurance, beach, some nice colleagues

    Kontras

work, students, climate, inequality, lack of transparency. Do not trust the positive "reviews" - these are posted by HR, or someone hired by HR. Anyone who actually works there will tell you it is a horrible environment. HR is not helpful, and in this country HR is important. Everyone is looking for a job, or just waiting to make the money they wanted to make and move on. The financial incentives are also... disappearing as things are getting quite expensive, there is a 5% tax, when you arrive you have to find accommodation and will see that it is extremely expensive. So if it is not financially lucrative, then there is really no reason to be here. The university is more like a high school in terms of students and service responsibilities (lots of them - advising, internship supervision, committee work) and students expecting you to be in the office all the time, irrespective of your office hours. Treatment of management is mostly unfair and not transparent - seems that even administrators from the western countries "adjust" to the ZU organizational culture. An unhappy place.
