    Pros

    Nice colleagues - however you never know who is the next to be fired. Thus the culture is caracterized by frustration.
    Flexitime makes work endurable. There are some benefits, e.g. a job ticket, discounts for books.

    Kontras

    The management in the US and UK wants standardization. But there is no "one size fits all" since the conditions and the requirements are different in each office. The pattern of the last years: Some software is introduced far before being mature and working properly. I guess this is because it is an objective of a manager. Colleagues are kicked out under the pretxt that things can be done automatically now using the newly introduces software. However, this is not the case and coworkers who should do other things to take the company forward, spend a lot of time trying to deal with this newly introduced software. Nobody cares that valuale know how is lost with these colleagues leaving the company. Nobody cares who will take over their duties. The only plan seems to be to save costs at any price.
    There is a thing called "The Wire" which is more of a waste bin than an information provider. Systems are extremely slow.

    Hierarchies are amazing - there are too many chiefs and too few indians. And it is getting even worse with these departments beeing wound up.

    Reorganizations happen too often with no clear concept.

     I could go on and on and on....

    Stop firing employees without any idea who will do their work - software obviously does not. Stop outsourcing. Stop sending mass messages to all employees. Reduce hierarchy. Give employees the tools which they need to do their work properly and efficiently.

    Pros

    - Great colleagues globally and a great sense of collaboration. This is the main reason to stay for most colleagues.
    - Serious attempts of Senior Management to change the culture and to sort out the massive technology issues.
    - Overall very healthy company financially due to its diversification

    Kontras

    - Continued lay-offs with no real plan behind. Grand rhetoric about treating affected colleagues in a dignified way, but this has no real substance. Decent severance packages cannot hide this.
    - Senior Management/ ELT well- meaning but unfortunately still rather removed from reality.
    - too much politics and croonism overall
    - Books/KL reorganization a disaster.
    - HR department under new leadership clueless and with no steer.
    - Finance/Operations hugely struggling.
    - If you are not based in Hoboken or Oxford, there is little opportunity for career progression.

    Listen to your colleagues on the ground. Stop being complacent - what the company is lacking is true leadership. Colleagues want to believe and trust in you - so stop paying lip service.

    Pros

    The products are good. The people are great. Flexitime. Good holidays. You feel connected to the community you are working with and with the content.

    Kontras

    Staff morale is extremely low. There is too much work to do and not enough time. Wiley's publish more for less money policy is applying huge pressure on editors because new products are launched without hiring new staff. There seems to be little opportunity for career progression.

    Your publish more, spend less model is stifling your products. You cannot continue to force new products onto staff without increasing capacity. You are forcing good editors out of the door.

    Good work/life balance, especially for new mothers, they seem to care.

    Kontras

    Career progression can be difficult, 5-10 + years to move up, but they do provide opportunities for some development. As a result, the turnover of staff was high in the editing department (every 2 years).

    Wiley is a great company and doing a very valuable business. There are alot of active and really smart people work for this company.

    Lack of understanding and strategy. Huge amount of temporary rulers. Reorg every 2-3 years.

    Pros

    Still some quality people there who truly care about changing and succeeding in new business environment. Company in the business of doing good for people in research and education, and admirable way to spend a career. Good PTO and flexible time and location policies.

    Kontras

    This used to be a company that played larger than it was because of a great culture and folks living that culture together to win. That culture has been destroyed in the last 4-5 years and Wiley now plays smaller than it is and doesn’t win enough to continue long term unless there’s radical change in the right direction. Too many mgt changes and no real direction other than platitudes from too many sr leaders who don’t really know businesses. Very sad what has happened but great Wiley family and poor sr leader choices have to bear the responsibility. They’ve listened to a lot of the wrong people.

    Never good when the stock crashes after a CEO and CFO earnings call. No trust from the market. CEO may be on right track however they need to rid themselves of poseurs and politicians and follow the real leaders who have shown they can be successful by their real numbers and results. I’m afraid though in these brutally tough market conditions we may never have enough to play with the larger and better managed companies in this space.
