    Pros

    You can get away with not doing much work if you want to. Good location. A desire to provide equality in the workplace.

    Kontras

    Lack of integration between departments. Lots of closed minded middle managers who have become entrenched in the organisation for decades. This resulted in some appalling, defensive behaviours. Duplication of systems, work and processes across the brands (very inefficient and unrewarding to make changes) . So many manual and error prone processes. Focus on cost cutting rather than innovation. Difficult to make... changes and improvements. Terrible outsourcing model results in poor quality resources filling roles they are not capable of fulfilling (e.g. system developers who can't program). Unfortunately the equality approach that results in promotion based on diversity, rather than capability.

    Pros

    * Contractors treated the same as permanent employees. * Head Office is currently being renovated to bring it in line with their new Barangaroo office. * People are very friendly and respectful. * Good work life balance. * Regular workplace functions held to promote socialisation between staff. * Transition to Agile project delivery makes work more enjoyable. * Supports many social initiatives (LGBT, female... equality, indigenous, beach safety, etc.)

    * Projects are run by Finance first, and Technology second. * Technology division is very political (particularly when it comes to solution decisions) while the rest of the organisation is not. * Some of the project management policies need to be revised to minimise the administration. * Culturally the organisation is fairly risk adverse (i.e. can be slow in making decisions), though the Agile iterative release... approach is helping to make people comfortable with new initiatives.

    Pros

    Very flexible with how you work, especially around having children. Lots of people work short weeks and days from home. Generally supportive of personal development and plenty of opportunity to move within the organisation.

    Kontras

    Big bureaucracy and everything that goes with it. Risk averse culture, focused on short term payback and approval by committee means it takes more effort to get an approval and funding than to do the work. Still weighed down by legacy systems and processes so nothing is cutting edge and even small changes take months and cost a fortune.

    Streamline project identification and funding process. Assign budget to quickly assess initiatives and prioritise. Make BSR half yearly or quarterly, with a rolling 12 month forward view funding and pipeline.

    Pros

    As a company, Westpac is very in-tune with gender diversity, work-life balance, etc. Benefits for full-time employees are good (sick leave carries over year-on-year, for example) and you might be able to find an area of the company with good people and satisfying work.

    Kontras

    No matter what senior management and C-level execs say, Westpac is a large bureaucracy addicted to traditional command-and-control structures and has been cutting costs for years in an attempt to appease shareholders. Factor this into any long-term career decision.

    A 'keeping-the-lights-on' mentality can be damaging to areas of the business that could have ways of increasing revenue if only given the chance.

    Bullying is present No "One Team" environment Most women are ore jealous of new staff. Backstab than support environment to survive.

    Follow your :One Team" policy from the top. Women managers should not bully their women staff or colleagues. They should be better mentors and set an example. Staff are too scared to say anything so they move from dept to dept, until they can find something external.
