    Pros

    Central London location with a young and vibrant culture. Benefits of working for Virgin included discounts on other franchises. Half price Virgin Media package. Contractual bonus. Good company size with approx 150 employees.

    Kontras

    Acquired by BSkyB in 2010 and no longer exists. Think were on the lower salary scales in the industry. Benefit being small employee number but harder to climb the ladder as a result.

    Pros

    - Reasonable pay - Location and parking (if you live anywhere near Dublin city centre or Northside Dublin) - Big company so job security is very good.

    - Bad atmosphere: Different departments are very much separated and while some are better than others, my experience in this regard was a very unhealthy atmosphere with some unbearable tension some days. More specifically, the accounts receivable team was miserable from personal experience; the team was encouraged not to talk bar work related topics. I was literally told "not to laugh" one day, having barely said a... word otherwise. - Working conditions and talent development: I found my superiors very unapproachable and even colleagues of mine felt the need to approach different department managers to have concerns addressed. There is no emphasis on developing individuals. I often sat with my work for the day done at 2pm with nothing to do, asking my line manager numerous times if there was anything else I could move onto to no avail. - Prehistoric systems and practice: the company use very dated systems (may now be updated after merger). The accounts receivable function in particular was very dated with a lot of laborious tasks having to be carried out that most companies have much more efficient processes for. For example, the company had no electronic refund process which meant physical cheques had to be printed on a very old faulty printer and then signed, enveloped and stamped every day. In trying to gain some accounts based experience, licking 100 envelopes and stamps a day was not what I had in mind. Overall, my experience with UPC / Virgin Media began positively but once I had completed starter training there was basically nothing else to learn (apparently) which made my work very repetitive. The atmosphere was really bad on my team and only deteriorated over time with some personality clashes developing (nothing to do with me), however this is not to say that other departments did not have more healthy environments. Many of the employees seem to be very long term in the company which is obviously a good sign so I felt very unfortunate to have found myself in one of the only dysfunctional teams in the company. Working with this company does have its benefits and is a very stable company to work for. I worked there when it was UPC and it has since been taken over, and while mostly the same staff have been kept it may be a decent place to create a career if your area of expertise is in the right department - but due to my own deeply unpleasant experience with the company I cannot give a positive review.
