  1. „Wonderful Experience”

    SternSternSternSternStern
Ehem. Praktikant - Research Chemist in Washington, DC

Ich habe weniger als ein Jahr bei US Naval Research Laboratory als gearbeitet

    Pros

The experience was incredible. I was introduced to an array of topics ranging from firefighting foams to cone calorimetry data. My supervisors were more than willing to sit down and discuss my findings and gave me advice as to how I could better my results. Fellow interns were genuinely interested in my research and would offer suggestions regarding my experiments. As an intern, the salary was substantial.

    Kontras

Some of the work became repetitive and slightly boring, but that stems from the fact that I had 10 weeks to complete a project and was able to finish my work before that time period, so I was tasked with repeating my experiments.

    Rat an das Management

Management was wonderful. There were frequent "moral boosting" exercises and events directed at the interns, and the people in the front office always seemed to be available. Great place to work.

    Negative Prognose

Ich habe für mehr als 3 Jahre bei US Naval Research Laboratory gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

A great place to get started. Good funding for equipment

    Kontras

Buildings are falling apart. Funding is very hard to get. Management is painfully out of date. For a "cutting edge" institution their greatest successes were in the 70s and 80s so the out look is grim.

    Rat an das Management

    Retire

    Pros

Many of the people are really great. The reputation helps you get recognition Historically it was a great lab

    Kontras

Most leadership is painfully out of date in their field and don't realize it You have to raise funding from your first day and making research secondary. Most funding agencies won't fund NRL so opportunities are very limited. Management is dishonest so they will shuffle your funds around to under funded departments It's a very top heavy organization and most out the management is a waste of space Top... management never turns over so the scientific outlook is stuck in the 80s

    Neutrale Prognose

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei US Naval Research Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

-Superb benefits -Reasonable work hours -Lots of cutting-edge work performed in-house -Lots of opportunity for scientists to pursue ideas

    Kontras

-No mission funding, so selling yourself and your work to funding agencies is a critical job function -Inadequate mentoring and guidance on how to get funding -Mediocre salaries and hard salary caps -Facilities and support functions (HR, computer networks, purchasing, etc.) that range from mediocre to abysmal -Bureaucracy (it is a government job, after all) -Very little (voluntary) lateral mobility, so it's... easy to get permanently trapped under a bad manager

    Rat an das Management

-Get facilities and services up to par -Vigorously and aggressively train young scientists in how to get funding (or lobby the Navy hard to get mission funding)
