Ich habe für mehr als 10 Jahre bei US Defense Intelligence Agency gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

There are many talented, smart people working at DIA who put up with many workplace annoyances because they are dedicated to the mission. DIA has broad responsibilities in the Defense and Intelligence communities so there are many different ways you can contribute. If you are looking for opportunities to work in national security and see the world, DIA is a good place to work - but you have to pursue opportunities... rather than waiting for them to drop into your lap.

    Kontras

Senior leadership. Based on several years of inconsistent, if not outright bad , leadership at the top of the agency senior civilian leaders are gun shy about making a decision, pursuing a new course. Leaders who demonstrate moral courage or a different perspective are usually shut down so everyone can stay the course. The workforce succeeds despite their senior leaders but that model can only be sustained for so... long.

    Rat an das Management

Move on - bad decisions were made for less than pure reasons but don't handicap future success by focusing on the past. Also, celebrate the unique mission of DIA rather than trying to duplicate another organizations work. Don't be afraid of new ideas. Be honest about who should be in leadership positions - the "old BOY" network hasn't served the workforce or the mission and they need to move on or out. Standards... should be standard or get rid of them. You can't have managers who have never left the organization or worked anywhere else tell current employees that they need to deploy, rotate positions, get advanced education when the current leaders did none of the above. Be honest with your workforce - they are smart adults who can deal with budget and other realities. What they cannot continue to deal with is being misled. Do what you say you are going to do - where are the opportunities for women and minorities?

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei US Defense Intelligence Agency (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Pay is fair across gender, race, religion, etc. Training is widely available and encouraged. Great benefits! New hiring structure is supposed to make it easier for career federal employees to climb through the ranks, instead of hiring every senior military officer who retires and filling up all the senior ranks with people who do not know the agency.

    Kontras

Promotion opportunities come down to how the person writes about themselves and how people located far away from the job site perceive the individual's ability to work at the next paygrade. This handcuffs the local leaders/managers who know the capabilities of the individual and find that person right for a position at the next paygrade.

    Rat an das Management

Let the local hiring managers make decisions about selecting people for the next paygrade - it would be great to have someone at HQ to adjudicate the decision, but the local leaders need to have more of a say in promotions at senior ranks.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 3 Jahren bei US Defense Intelligence Agency (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Job security, great healthcare benefits, amazing, PTO, and a decent 401k.

    Kontras

Here is an honest review of the department. This agency is an "old boys club" where the baby-boomers have ruined how the government works. They only promote those who either given money to the current administration in office, or someone that has a mom or dad in a high ranking place within the government. Lets say about 60 people work in my department and out of those, 50, have received their jobs and promotions... because are high ranking members within the government. For example, one person had a fashion degree with no experience at all and right out of college they were able to move from a GS-7 to a GS-13 in less than 5 years. We have applicants who have PhDs or other wonderful experience that the government needs in order to improve how things run, but they do not get hired, because their mom and dad don't work in the government. Being either a female or a minority you are pretty much set to fail. Our department has been investigated number of times because well-qualified women or minorities have been denied promotions because of the "old boys club". Most of our high ranking directors are only around until a new administration takes over, so they are a bit busy trying to work the system in order to find a job in the private-sector. Lastly, the government is down-sizing so it is getting harder to move up. Even if you had the skills, the education, and the experience on your resume, but you do not have the exact KSA (Job description) on the posting you will not even have your resumed read.

Hire people who are qualified, look into the OIG reports about corruption. You are losing so much young talent.
