Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Totokaelo (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Huge difference in leadership and investment in the company since the old CEO (Jill) sold the company and the new leadership and management team took over.

    Kontras

Now, there are some growing pains (since there's someone actually investing in the growth of the company to scale it to the next level).

    Rat an das Management

Keep up the good work, continue the communication to staff. The transparency is appreciated.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Totokaelo gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

Opportunity to meet, bond and network with industry experts, smart, talented, hard working co-workers and respected industry talent who's skills aren't currently being utilized at Totokaelo - you can utilize in your next venture. You will create a mutual support system to help cope with the CEO.

    Kontras

    - Hypocritical , "preachy" , lying, manipulative, and unethical Strategic environment rooted on the CEO regurgitating quotes from leadership books , tech companies, self help books and the biographies of much more successful CEO's and Creative Leaders. Statements and direction that is entirely dependent on her daily mood which is ever changing. Real intellects do not need to constantly make statements about how smart they are, what kind of genius they are, what kind of leader they are , and how high their IQ and EQ are - because they are actioning it in everything they do. Constantly making "I" statements - unless it has to do with failure. That will be a "you"statement.

    - Lack of care for people - not only employees and vendors - humans in general. Not only does the revolving door of employees not bother her - it is preferred. A whole new group of people to try and brainwash with a whole new set of lies, and a whole set of recently exited employees to place blame on for all the companies current problems.

-Does not care about the talent and skills of in house talent and will not foster, develop and grow professional skills and talent of her employees as it is too threatening and intimidating to her own insecurities and junior level of understanding across all departments.

-CEO intentionally puts unqualified people in roles not needed or properly defined for the growth of the company so that she can maintain control and superiority over their skill sets. She then feels no remorse when she realizes 2 months later the role isn't needed and the wrong hire she made can be fired. .

    - CEO has zero knowledge , understanding, experience or ability to respect, understand or follow standard protocol or practices in order to partner with outside creative services, vendors, and to allow for employees to effectively do their jobs. You will spend most of your time doing what she tells you to do, then having the outcome become a disaster, and then getting blamed for ruining the company, then going back having to gather your evidence, defending yourself and then getting blamed for not raising your hand to her when she was telling you to do the wrong thing.

    - Complete lack of accountability. She is the complete physical and mental embodiment of someone who takes zero accountability for her life and the business's current reality.

-CEO places black and white blanket statements of importance and judgement on the intellect level of all employees based on immature characteristics like how they look, what they wear, their personal backgrounds and relationships, how fast they talk and how quick they do their work even if it is the lowest quality of output possible.

    - CEO will find reasons and make up work for you to do on Fridays at 8 pm and on the weekend in order for you to stay at the office with her. Corporate hostage. If you do not engage in email or respond to her on weekends on all topics merely superficial and that have zero influence on revenue nor are critical you will be held in a negative light.

-CEO uses freelancers, interviews, staff and their personal networks for her further gain and then discards all contracts or progress once she has what she needs. She justifies screwing people over by claiming they were dumb, not smart, and did not deliver on something she did not communicate clearly as a deliverable in which payment was contingent on.

    - No clear direction, no clear brand message. Confusing for employees and clients. Different fonts, logos, packaging, site merchandising, styling. Zero consistency. No time to see initiatives through from start to finish due to CEO changing her mind and the directives.

    - Bipolar, schizophrenic environment.

    - over abundance of rules, which are almost always made up on the spot - how to dress, how to talk, how to shop, how to do your hair (in the company manual) , who to date, dating in general, who to be friends with, how to pick photos, write emails, supplies to use, to do lists to construct, notes to take, books to read and every single action a human can quite possibly engage in - is being judged and assessed and stereotyped and eventually held against you if in contrast to the narrow minded reclusive mindset of the CEO.

    - CEO refuses to recognize and empower big initiative long term strategic wins by senior executives. Only thinks day to day with zero plans, that change daily, and she only rewards and celebrates the accomplishments of low hanging tasks that in normal companies are the job of an intern. Degrading and embarrassing to employees with real resumes and past accomplishments.

-- CEO trumps the speed in which the company moves yet is the #1 contributor to the delays, changes, mistakes, and failed projects because of her need to control , dictate , and dominate all areas of the company despite not having the knowledge, capacity, emotional stability and skill set to do so. The amount of background behind the scenes work employees have to do to clean up her mess, salvage relationships and projects, and the amount of time it takes to prepare things the way she "needs" to see and learn things is a huge drain on resources and time.

-- CEO trumps on "running lean" yet her lack of ownership over bad decision making, no long term planning, inconsistent direction, fiscal irresponsibility, failure to adhere to a schedule, reluctance to respect and follow appropriate timelines for projects bearing huge financial repercussions if not executed properly and overall attitude that she will and can do whatever she wants when wants and how she wants despite what is right for the growth and success of the company has resulted in a serious unstable financial environment. The fact someone running a company simply color codes an excel spreadsheet without any knowledge of what a P&L is and call themselves a CFO, exit 5 AP people in a year is alarming.

    - culture is depicted that of a start up despite being in business for 13 years and declining growth

    - no job security - Not even if you were the #1 all star through out your career. Not because the expectations are high at Totokaelo it is because the CEO has zero compassion, knowledge or understanding of other human beings, what your job entails, and zero experience of what anything outside her peripheral vision looks like.

    - Hit and hug culture. One day you are getting praised company wide, the next day you're on the chopping block, then you're getting apologized too and praised in order to finish some sort of dirty work the CEO doesn't want to do, then you're hated on again, then she feels bad or gets paranoid you will talk or influence others to leave with you, so she hugs maybe even gives you a raise...to last until you are fired officially 3 weeks later.

    - extreme narcissism

    Rat an das Management

Advise to current managers and all employees - Document everything. Every text, every email. Send it to your personal email and document it. You will be asked to compromise your ethics - morally and legally. You will be witness to so much inappropriate comments. Protect yourself and your reputation.
    - If you do not have a compassionate manager in between you and the CEO you will most likely be fired within the first month. Do not leave an amazing company or job for Totokaelo. You will regret it - financially and emotionally.
Advice to Jill Wenger - The story , purpose , and mission of Totokaelo, though entirely fictional, is a good one. Either start embodying what you are putting down on paper or on a white board or sell the company to someone more qualified. Take the time to care about people, this industry is too small especially in New York where even competitors are often collaborators in providing introductions and opportunities for growth, when the favors are reciprocated. Hire CFO's, COO's and Human Resources so that in house talent can actually be free to do their basic job functions and come to work feeling ownership over their contributions to the company.
Seek serious professional and mental health support. The most successful, smart and powerful people in any industry are often the most humble and genuine who have a real reason or resume to actually mentor and inspire. No one respects you, no one likes you, no one is inspired or motivated by you. You should not be leading human beings.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Totokaelo gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

You will have the opportunity to work with and among incredibly talented, well educated and well experienced, entrepreneurial minded, smart, high performing, hardworking COWORKERS who have all achieved high levels of success, excellence, and respect in their corresponding fields. You will bond with these people and create lasting relationships.

    Kontras

The Totokaelo brand message and open letter from the CEO attract high performers who leave high paid, high performing, well supported careers to branch into a new venture based on false pretenses intentionally created and portrayed by the CEO.

You will not add value to your career. You will leave Totokaelo having learned "soft side" skills such as learning how to deal with a difficult CEO and learning how to avoid actioning unethical and illegal business decisions. Your potential and skill set will go unused, untapped, and ultimately unneeded because of the way the company is operated.

CEO: Jill Wenger is inexperienced, short sighted, and difficult. She creates a culture of closed doors, competition, and fear by blaming and slandering previous employees to internal staff and outside contacts, praising low level work, and making sexist, racist, and generally hostile comments.

She has poor leadership skills and a need for control in every business decision. Large to small, from company "strategy" to how emails are worded, what employees wear, and when to order toilet paper. Jill pitches a start up environment with a "you try it" attitude. Unfortunately, that isn't the case and is far from reality. It's a failing business with a controlling, manipulative leader, who has no internal compass for good business, ethics, the law, correct English grammar, or human emotion.

    Rat an das Management

Hire a COO or sell the company.

    Advice to Prospectives
If you are quitting or are laid back off make sure to check your bank account. Employee checks have been withheld on numerous occasions. Keep all records of email and texts.

Great people- everyone genuinely cares to get the job done and done well.

    Kontras

Low pay and since it's a new company, you never know when you might lose your job.

    Rat an das Management

More engagement and appreciation for employees, whether that be through pay increases, dinners, a higher discount, or even just written or verbal praise and gratitude. A lot of the attention and praise is on the sellers, which is understandable, but the people behind the scenes work hard and get little credit.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Totokaelo gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Beautiful product and prestigious list of vendors
    - Talented co-workers, despite an average tenure of 3 months

    Kontras

Totokaelo is a completely unprofessional workplace with a leadership style that is micro-managing, condescending and downright childish. Again and again, extremely talented and knowledgeable hires leave the company (or are quietly forced out by being ignored or having their duties taken away without notice). Totokaelo relocated to NY in January 2015 and hired creative, client care and buying teams. A year on, more than 15 people have come and gone and nobody who was part of the original team remains. This also explains why the company will post a lot of vacancies regularly; it's not because they are growing at light speed, it's just the revolving door at work.

Talented people are drawn to Totokaelo because leadership paints an ideal picture of what company culture is like, how fast it's growing and how they are pioneering a new, novel kind of luxury fashion retail. The reality is drastically different!

If you are seen wearing any brand the store doesn’t carry, whether luxury or fast fashion, you are openly berated, sneered at and made fun of. So even though Totokaelo says its mission is to empower people to dress the way they want, there is actually just one right way of dressing. Employees have had to lie that their clothes are “vintage” to avoid being called out. Even with the employee discount, TK brands are out of reach for most people. The in-house private label costs much less to produce and would be an affordable way for employees to dress in an approved way, but the discount remains the same.

Totokaelo claims that the culture fosters agility and collaboration. In reality, vendors and employees are constantly asked to only communicate with management, rather than laterally. This creates a horrible bottleneck culture where nothing actually gets done because approval needs to come from the top for everything, even office supplies. Leadership will put a stop to anything you work on that was not explicitly approved beforehand, even tasks as mundane as store walk-throughs by the merchant team. Worst of all, leadership actively pits teams against each other and openly plays favorites with "Team CEO".

Unethical behavior abounds. Vendor emails (especially about payment) go unanswered and the radio silence is blamed on the most recent person who left. Rather than firing people, because leadership avoids confrontation, their duties are taken away and their emails are ignored until they get the message. When people leave, their tasks are absorbed by existing team members without additional compensation. Management actively offers compensation in exchange for writing positive Glassdoor reviews. Employees have also been asked to write fake reviews.

Most bizarrely, Totokaelo is a self-proclaimed tech company, a "data-driven disruptor", but does not invest in technology at all. The custom self-built system breaks daily and requires constant testing, which falls on the team members who use the systems, so they waste their time troubleshooting bugs or inventing workarounds. The data is incomplete and cannot be verified. Real performance is thus never tracked and changes are based largely on incomplete information, whims and intuition.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably considering applying to Totokaelo because it looks shiny and glossy from the outside. You’re probably amused while reading these negative reviews, thinking that you’re different from all these quitters and you’re hardworking, professional and a problem-solver. All kinds of people have come through these doors and those who have been successful here blindly believe in the company, see their direct reports and teammates as disposable and set aside their personal integrity to do what it takes for the company.

    Rat an das Management

    - Retain the talented people you recruit by letting them do their jobs
    - Get a proper reporting system so you can actually track performance and manage cash flow
    - Sell a majority stake so the new owner can put in place new management who are experienced and not delusional about their abilities
