Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Potato (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

Potato grew rapidly, then held its size for a while, while it developed from a dev agency into a full-service agency by growing a design team. Around this time the work happened to more often be static sites than complex app builds.

Potato's always had a great social culture and a huge amount of employee freedom, but this plateau annoyed quite a lot of people, which dented the culture slightly.

But as of 2018, the company is investing in repositioning as a product studio, which is bringing some interesting work (and some not so, which hopefully we'll learn from). It's a bumpy road, but a lot of excitement about where we're going.

    Kontras

The current change means quite a lot of uncertainty: processes that are still in flux, people still getting used to new ways of working, and some of the less glamorous projects are still around for now.

It's still not a huge company, so doesn't haven't as much variety of projects (particularly tech-wise) as a lot of employees might like. But at least that means things are rarely done for tech's sake alone without an underlying user need.

    Rat an das Management

Hang on in there. Put even more emphasis on communication: more stuff on the walls about what's going on, more Q&A / office hours sessions, more opportunities for employees to understand the change so they understand how they can best be a part of it.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Potato gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - Flexible hours - people are trusted to do the work they need to do, employees aren't watched when they come in and out of office

    - Highly skilled team - the designers and developers here are truly excellent at what they can do

    - Self motivated team members - its the first time I've worked with a development team who truly took responsibility for the work they were doing and cared about the client's business objectives when delivering solutions - rarely had to micromanage

    - Management takes care of employees - the benefits are ideal, daily free lunches are a huge weekly cost saving and made me feel a more value employee

    - Existing clients - highly recognised and impressive businesses to work with, presents good opportunities and experience

    - Strong business direction and strategy - The MD has a strong vision and clear direction, and is transparent about it, which feels right in the current industry climate

All in all, was a pleasure working with this team. Would have worked here longer had it not been for my own relocation!

    Kontras

    - Currently in the process of making changes to PMing/coaching methods and approaches to projects - any systemic change can cause anxiety/stress during transition, this additional stress is the only con I had for Potato, which I felt was a temporary necessity for the business anyway!

    - 4 stars only because any business has room for improvement

    Rat an das Management

    - Continue to be transparent with employees
    - Get a broader team involved in the new client projects coming in, to focus people's attention on the new way of approaching projects

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Potato gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

You’ll work with some amazing designers, developers, and projects managers. Many of your co-workers are genuine people who will end up becoming your friends. Some of the companies you’ll deliver projects for will look good on your CV when you’re applying for your next job.

    Kontras

    - Lack of resources. During my last year, all of the projects I worked on were significantly under-resourced, resulting in long hours and a stressful team.
    - Salaries aren’t competitive.
    - Poor work/life balance. You’ll work 60 hour weeks on more than one occasion.
    - Uninteresting work. You’ll build a lot of static marketing websites.
    - There’s no career growth here. The chance to work on projects that will help you grow professionally depends on if certain people in management like you.
    - Alcohol centric company culture.
    - Non inclusive environment. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re from an underrepresented group in tech.
    - Toxic work environment. Management is quick to pit people against each other and are quick to blame people when things go wrong.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei Potato gearbeitet (Weniger als ein Jahr)

    Pros

    - fun environment/people
    - opportunity to work on interesting projects
    - free lunches
    - expensed gym/phone

    Kontras

    - no opportunity to learn/grow on the team
    - unclear on boarding/expectations
    - perks and benefits are not great
    - cuts corners and doesn’t think about “people first”. It’s all about the money

    Rat an das Management

For the long hours and high speed of work that is asked for, there is not motivation to continue working with little recognition. This burns bridges with past employees who can help spread positive words about their experiences at the company. Therefore, help the company expand. What made Potato a great place to work before is gone now.

    - Excellent conversations
    - Challenging work, in a good way.
    - Free lunches.
    - Flex work hours.
    - Unlimited holidays.
    - Professional project management.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei Potato (Über 3 Jahre)

    Pros

    - Employees are very trusted
    - Generally if you need something to do your job you'll get it
    - Very high standard of developer working here (subjective, in comparison to other places I've worked)
    - Pragmatic approach to assessing problems. Definitely not a blame culture
    - The annual offsite
    - Fairly frequent parties
    - Huge amount of effort is put in to try and keep everybody happy

    Kontras

    - Can be stressful but those days are the exceptions. It's in those situations that you're grateful for a great, close, supportive team. A lot of effort is put in to try and avoid people feeling stressed and if anybody is overworked it's seen as a symptom of some other failure in a project
    - Relatively flat organisational structure means there isn't as much opportunity for formal promotion as one might find in a much larger company or one that has more of a traditional hierarchy. Plenty of opportunity to work with different technology though
    - Working here will spoil you for working elsewhere

    Rat an das Management

Continue to treat everybody like trusted adults. The greatest single strength of Potato is the people working here.
