    Pros

    People, Infrastructure, software used.
Loved the way the scaled and managed the network

    Kontras

Sony Germany managment. We had a lot of problems communicating with Gaikai mother company in Germany, amongst other things the english language was not commonly spoken.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei PlayStation (Über 5 Jahre)

    Pros

    - Great educational, medical and transportation perks
    - Great bonuses and employee discounts on PlayStation and Sony products
    - Lots of opportunities to travel overseas, particularly to Tokyo or London
    - Supportive leadership that lets employees explore different career paths and grow
    - Passionate coworkers who love gaming and are really into what they are doing
    - A low-conflict environment with a strong drive for consensus and respect
    - Agile development practices with continuous improvement, hackathons and quick adjustments based on lessons learned
    - Work from home opportunities in the U.S. and management focused on results, not attendance
    - A quirky and creative environment typical of the gaming industry
    - A company that encourages playing games at work
    - A very approachable CEO and most other top leaders
    - Lots of women in leadership positions, even in Japan (mostly up to Sr. Director level but also some VPs)

    Kontras

    - Incompetence is sometimes tolerated indefinitely, true to the life-employment model of Japan
    - Managers frequently lack the most fundamental people management skills and don't know how to motivate their employees
    - Lack of open conflict leads to a lot of back-channeling, politics and having to read between the lines
    - In the Tokyo office, expectations about work hours are insane and no one can work from home, which leads to female workers still largely being forced to choose between having career success and being single, or having a decent but unimpressive job at PlayStation and having a family
    - The super-Agile style of the San Fransisco office frequently clashes with the Waterfall thinking of Tokyo
    - As of 2018, analytics is still not a big part of decision making and a lot of product managers are weak
    - Employee performance management is unpredictable and convoluted. There are no company-wide OKRs and it's hard to understand how performance goals are measured

    Rat an das Management

Focus on training your managers in people management skills, particularly if they manage people from different work cultures. Normalize work expectations across different regional offices to reduce bias, such as "everyone in San Francisco is lazy". Raise the bar for the Product Management organization and train your PdMs to be true product leaders. Stop protecting poor performers just because they have been with the company for a long time - it's bad for everyone's morale. Make VPs and Sr. Directors get out of their offices and talk to each other and their teams - they are not on the same page most of the time. Reduce hierarchical and cocky behavior in the London office, which is contrary to the spirit of PlayStation.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei PlayStation gearbeitet (Über 8 Jahre)

    Pros

Good people, occasional paid trips if you're in the right department, good benefits such as pension and travel allowance, the prestige of being able to say you work for Playstation

    Kontras

Poor pay, too many middle managers who contribute very little, poor facilities and tools to do the job, people held back in their careers and not given the chance to grow. I was also aware of female members of staff being paid less than their male counterparts, however I'm not sure how widespread across the company this was.

    Rat an das Management

Cut out the middle management that don't do much and invest more in the people who do the work. Pay people better and give an opportunity for people to progress in their careers without going into management.

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei PlayStation gearbeitet

    Pros

    - People love the products, the PS4 in particular
    - Colleagues are great and fun
    - Good parties
    - Cool brand to work for

    Kontras

    - Politics between EMEA and US especially
    - People in leadership have been there a long time and can be conservative
    - Sony getting involved more which means the brand is a bit less cool

    Rat an das Management

Promote people more, pay more and you'll keep people longer .

    Fun place to work
PlayStation is highly respected in the industry
Much of the work is cutting edge
    Diverse and respectful workplace

    Kontras

Can sometimes be quite corporate although that goes with the territory of being a large global company

    Rat an das Management

Ich habe in Vollzeit bei PlayStation gearbeitet (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

The people, the technology, the environment, the cool factor of working at PlayStation, the fact that you work at a company that has customers who are not just customers they are fans! The executives are actually really cool people who do not sit on a pedestal. In fact, all of the management team and all of the individual contributors are genuinely sincere people who really care about the product and that’s an amazing thing. The VPs and SVPs are incredible, approachable, knowledgeable, thoughtful and caring about the fans first. They practice what they preach for sure when it comes to being the best place to play (and work!) It’s really an incredible place to work for so many reasons. The benefits and the perks and everything, I won’t even describe because they’re what you would expect… Simply amazing. It is definitely the coolest place I’ve ever worked and that’s a high bar. There are so many great things to say about this company that I would probably spend the next hour writing them but I don’t know if anyone would ever read all the amazing things I could say.

    Kontras

No clue how they ever delivered any product in the 20+ years before I got there. The process, or processes, are a total mess. No one business unit has any of the same or even similar processes - even with in the same business unit. Remember now, I am giving a four star review here because it is truly a pleasure to work there. It would be a 5 Star review....But, there are some serious deficiencies in how the company operates that have been solved at software and hardware companies years and years ago. Generally speaking, there aren’t many egos to deal with but, there are a few and most of those come from the newer individual contributors, not the management team. Thankfully for the customers, a.k.a. fans, they make billions of dollars and can afford to make billions of mistakes and still deliver consistently. It’s a crazy mystery I’ll never understand but it does actually work I guess. The fact that no one knows who does what is the biggest challenge. Figuring out what people do in the company, because no one actually seems to know and I’m talking about people who have been there for years and years is amazingly difficult. AMAZINGLY DIFFICULT.

    Rat an das Management

Keep being awesome. Please look to your new hires as fast promotions because you have a lot of people who are stale. Make new opportunities even if they don’t exist. You will be rewarded by loyal talent you can rely on and make the stale people need to become fresh. Watch the burnout pace and hire well above and beyond your budget. There’s always room for new directors even if you think there isn’t. You’re gonna have the customers, you might as well get ahead of it. Drop the price point of some services and listen more to your customers about that and major feature requests. You really have to act faster to what the consumers really want. Don’t triage twitter and reddit... think of it as free user testing, and please listen to them. Just one last note to the Senior leaders, please take this advice as honest as it was a really true pleasure working there.
