    -Respectful working environment that prioritizes the right values -Feel heard, change is encouraged, management is approachable -Low turnaround, so you really get to know your colleagues over time -Job offers just the right amount of challenge and predictability -My department has a lot of freedom in terms of how we operate on a daily basis

    -Flex day not available for many new hires and departments (treatment of staff not consistent across Member Services) -Can be very strict about when breaks or lunches are taken

    Work/life balance is important to everyone - so allowing some to have more access to flexible schedules than others creates an unbalanced atmosphere that is felt throughout Member Services.

    - Nice investment performance - good bonus (only to a very small percentage of people who have their hands on the pot)

    Kontras

    - fake investment performance based on faked model valuations. Model validation is a joke. - Don't know what risk really is - fake regulatory oversight - ineffective because the CFO knows nothing about risk but his rise to glory. CRO is reporting to Chief investment officer...figure that?! - operating like parents who can't have any opinions other than theirs. People put up with it because who wants to bite the... hand that feed them. - CFO governs by fear...nice mafia management style - lots of bullying - HR is your best friend when they want to hire you, but they have no reservation to put you on the guillotine at any time. Ask around and do your home work. - No real friends, because lots of back stabling.

    No use to advising to management. Everyone thinks that just because annual return is good, then everything is working well. That's not risk management. Wait till the next crash. But then that's the plan, most of these high level executives would have earned lots of $$$ by then and they won't stick around long enough hopefully to be put on trial.

    -Caring family culture (albeit with very strict parents) -Good compensation and benefits -Low stress environment -Strong and healthy business

    -Old fashioned Theory X and hierarchical management style/structure prevalent. -Reluctant to embrace modern practices, processes and technologies - Flexible working is a dirty word.

    Pros

    Global exposure to direct and indirect investing in just about every asset class. Risk concious but still looks for innovative ways to maintain its top tier performance. Excellent programs and focus on developing junior professionals. Generally great people that are smart and not super-political. Compensation is competitive at mid level positions and lifestyle is very competitive. Location is free of... distractions and TTC accessible.

    Very low turnover so advancement is limited past a certain level and you need to advance to get get paid more. Tenure has as much, or more, value than performance. HR is very locked in terms of its talent management program and not always aligned on what is required to be a successful investor, so difficult for mid career professionals to jump the queue. Senior management sponsorship is an absolute requirement... for advancement but made more difficult by the constant changing of departmental heads. Desire to drive collaboration and constant tweaking to the comp system has led to lower individual accountability and confusion around "what do I need to do to get paid/promoted". As the plan matures, a risk-focus will , necessarily, take away from the returns-focus leading to some change in what has been a great culture. Location makes meetings and networking very inconvenient and makes for a long commute for anybody south of Eglinton.

    Download decision-making on investment department hiring and promotion decisions making to departments with support from HR. Develop formal mentoring programs between investment professionals to eliminate need for informal senior management sponsorship. Have a role for top-performing investors to get paid as much or more than senior people managers. Have a downtown location for investment employees who don't... want to trek up to Yonge and Finch all the time.

    -Lots of autonomy -Friendly and smart colleagues -Supportive culture (no backstabbing)

    -Bureaucracy has multiplied in past 3 years -Complacent culture - focus on legacy and status quo -Limited advancement - more focus on tenure/age than individual performance -More focus on PR than actual investment results -Management inconsistency and instability - continual change and reorgs

    Go back to what made this organization great 5-10 years ago... (true) delegated authority, focus on quantifiable results, promote high potential people. The changes in past 3 years have been generally negative, becoming more corporate, more risk averse, and less entrepreneurial. Be willing to cull the weak and reward the strong (even if it slightly changes the entrenched culture).
