    Pros

Very friendly working environment and good culture in the office. Work life balance was fully supported in the practice I worked in. Extremely talented and intelligent employees who really know their stuff. This is particularly true of the research and EA community who are generally the glue behind most projects. Both the location of, and the office itself are probably the best you’ll see in London. ... Great exposure to clients and lots of responsibility given compared to other search firms. Company is really trying to move away from how it was once perceived in the market - this will take time but it's doing the right things.

    Kontras

I’ll start by saying that the positives outweigh the negatives at Odgers and that some reviews you’ll see on here should be taken with a pinch of salt. I’ve gone in to more detail below as I genuinely think if the company tweaked a few things it would be appreciated by a number of colleagues. Firstly, I felt that there should be more clarity in terms of expectations for individual roles. If you weren’t a fee... earner, which I was not, it wasn’t clear what constituted success, there were no quantifiable metrics or deliverables where you were able to gauge how well you were doing (or weren’t doing). This led to a very subjective progression path through the company with promotions based on the relationship you had with fee earners you were working with – some people move quickly through the business while others stay in roles for an extended period of time without much clarity as to why. I guess this point is linked to the first, but feedback was often very vague when it came to reviewing your role in the business. In some cases, feedback would be delivered through different people and conflict with what you were previously told. It would help here for line managers/fee earners to ensure that they are on the same page before delivering feedback. The onus to drive your career is very much on the individual. This may suit some people but in my view one size does not fit all. For example, you must apply to be promoted and you can’t be nominated (I have never encountered another business that does it this way). Some people need to be pushed and I feel senior staff should be more hands on in this regard – very few fee earners I worked with took an interest in developing people’s careers. Lastly, employee benefits need work – an early finish on a Friday and a coherent company wide work from home policy do not cost money but should be considered.

Take time to consider the importance of developing peoples careers other than fee earners, to ensure that you don't lose good people. Other than that I enjoyed my time working at Odgers.

    Pros

Good pay for an EA of £40,000 per annum, plus an un-confirmed bonus that is formed as part of each practices' discretion annually. From what I heard usually about £2K. Lots of corporate socials, although employees are expected to pay e.g. Yoga on the roof / Nail technician that visits the offices / Charity fundraising

    Kontras

Culture. Granted the senior team seem to be trying to improve, although sounding drastic the only way would be for the existing hierarchy of fee earners and seniors to be completely culled. In meeting the teams, one senior consultant actually, genuinely described Odgers as "Your typical White, Middle class company" and this is sadly what it seemed to be. Think "support groups" for existing EA's and hushed HR... grievances (Usually due to the power balance between the male "fee earners" and their female EA project managers)

Great work over the last 2 years with the culture and something to be very proud of. More needs to be done with thinking about experience of client and candidate to be less process and procedure and more commercial.

    Pros

Salary package very attractive and good employer for offering financial incentives. Company training provided and great support for individuals whom are new to recruitment.

    Kontras

Very little progression opportunities -a lot of push back on the employee being the driver of progression but little support from management to do so. Very reluctant to progress employees esp at lower levels - too much emphasise on Fee-Earners/partners. Disappointing treatment of employees who work reduced/part time hours - viewed differently to the full time employees. The views of the management on flexible... working trickle down into the wider team making for uncomfortable environment. Although a well structured company very stringent on their processes and structure leaving little room for widening employees skill set. Micro management is also a massive problem!

Embrace a better work life balance and realise that reduced hours does not mean a reduced effort nor does it hold the individual back from being progressed. Need to embrace Diversity & inclusion more and offer support to all workers but esp part time employees to ensure maximum efficiency is achieved. Also ensure teams are being managed - too many issues go unnoticed or resolved by senior management which... leads to employees dissatisfaction. More emphasis on employee progression to retain the talent already employed by Odgers. Focus on employees at all levels not just senior management!

    Pros

decent work/life balance. If your boss is good, then your life is good. Opposite is true too however.

    Kontras

Consultants here are ones who couldn't or wouldn't make it at one of the big 5 firms or ones that had to retire from one due to age and got restless. This is NOT a well oiled machine like the mother-ship, Odgers UK. Minimal collaboration between the two and the US side is much more in its infancy. A lot of operations are bootstrapped and penny-pinched. Minimal back office support and IT infra (IT team does the... best they can with what they have) DB feels like a souped up excel spreadsheet. Minimal collaboration between offices. Consultants might as well be independent franchisees. Entire levels of employees were cut without warning. Business is business but this firm is pretty ruthless.

Steve Potter had incredible luck starting this firm in the US right at the beginning of the longest economic expansion in US history as companies started hiring like crazy. However, when the going gets tough, this firm will likely be one of the first to fall. Steve may have been Russel Reynold's bag man and a great consultant, but he is not a great manager, does not set clear expectations of employees and is not... the one to lead the firm into the new millennium.
