    Pros

I remember the first few weeks after joining NLG and chatting with my new colleagues and finding out most of them had been working there for over 10 years. It is rare for a game studio to last for that long, especially an independent one like NLG. It did not take long however to figure out how they managed to pull this off: - NLG has an incredible people culture. Your coworkers will make you feel like family,... like you had been there the whole time, treating you with respect and kindness. NLG also organizes social events from time to time to give an opportunity for all the departments to mingle and get to know each other. - Organic communication is encouraged. While you might be tempted to shoot off an email or message to your coworkers, there are a lot of situations where getting off your desk and speaking directly with your coworker leads to much greater clarity and faster turnarounds. - Your opinions feel valued and respected, no matter your role. Your ideas are challenged and you have opportunities to defend them in a work environment that is constantly encouraging you to bring your wildest ideas to the table and discuss them among peers. - For those looking to constantly better themselves or are just curious; you will find artists organizing skill sharing sessions after work to raise their skill levels, programmers conducting weekly study sessions to tackle on new challenges, etc - You are surrounded by extremely talented and skillful people and you learn so much by just being around them and feeding off that passion. - Management cares and is always looking out for you, making sure your concerns are heard and are acted on and that you have the tools that you need in order to get your job done.

    Kontras

    - Instead of having a cascading chain of command, the studio has more of matrix management style. While it definitely has great advantages it can also make it more challenging during high load times and you might feel pulled in all directions. - Another point that piggybacks onto the last point is that since it is a fairly flat structure, people looking to move up the "ladder" in terms of career growth will not... find as much room to move. - Working with a full array of proprietary tools can be a double edged sword. On one hand you have the greatest flexibility to evolve the tools into what you need per project and have them be extremely efficient, on the other hand you have to dedicate enough resources to keep them up to date and depending on time constraints, it is not always possible. New employees might have a little bit more of a learning curve at the beginning.

    Pros

If you like Nintendo, NLG is one of the only places in North America you can taste the Nintendo development experience. NLG runs projects slightly differently than most western studios, and has tuned its project managerial style around the idiosyncrasies of working with the respected Japanese publisher. There's lots to learn from this unique publisher partnership - whether you're in Art, Design, or Production. ... There are many personality types and ages employed here, though the company has a higher percentage of young-family stage workers than there used to be. It's not a "party" studio. The founders of the company are present, daily, and are a functional core part of the team. If you want to grow your skils and are self-driven, there is nothing stopping you from developing them here, though if you require more structured guidance you may not find this company provides you with enough studio-driven structure for intense personal development. If you're the type that gains satisfaction from creating a *popular* video game, it's likely that you'll work on something that will be published with high visibility and seen by millions of people. They've got a bunch of health initiatives and space to exercise.

    Kontras

    - Compensation is lower. - Oppressive NDA constraints for artists. - Growth opportunities cap out early due to the nature of studio size. Low turnover at senior levels means low organic windows for advancement.

    Pros

Work life balance is better than some others though some overtime is expected but unpaid. Very talented and friendly people to work with. Company makes an effort to throw social events for workers and their loved ones. Good medical benefits if your full time.

    Kontras

Minimal benefits or paid leave if you’re a contractor. Salaries are below standard of the industry. Work for hire means little creativity in some areas and endless waiting time on responses and approval. Overrun by producers that don’t seem to know what they are doing who look for guidance from other producers, who then look for more guidance from more producers. Too many producers?

    Pros

This is the best work environment I had the chance to work in so far. The people are Great, and so are the perks and the projects!

    Kontras

No real pipeline for 3D. This is good and bad, bad because you don't have many tools, but good because you're free to do it your way as long as the final product meets the production requirements.

    Rat an das Management

Nothing to say, keep it like this, it's awesome!

    Pros

Great working culture. A truly collaborative environment that encourages you to be proactive in giving creative inputs. Consists of very respectable upper management team and supervisors who believes in making excellent products. A company that strives for good work/life balance so employees feel motivated everyday rather than dreading going to work. Wonderful coworkers who are team oriented and down to earth. Easy... to communicate with different departments which makes the entire company works effectively as a team. Doesn't force or forcefully "persuade" you to do overtime like many other studios in this industry.

Not the most up to date software

    Rat an das Management

Should really invest some time and money in updating to new softwares and in order to compete with other studios in the market.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 5 Jahren bei Next Level Games - Vollzeit

    Pros

    - Leadership is down to earth, open and honest, and respectful of everyone in the company - Mutual Respect, not a lot of hierarchy - Lots of opportunity for people to move between roles and try different things - People tend to stick around because the company treats them well - A feeling of ownership over your work, as opposed to being a cog in the wheel

    Kontras

    - Not the best place for working with cutting edge technology - Not as much opportunity for climbing the ladder as in a big corporate environment - Probably not the highest salaries, they are open about the fact that they don't try to get into a bidding war, instead they try to keep people happy in other areas, such as work-life balance.

    Rat an das Management

Keep doing what you are doing.

    Pros

NLG is a fantastic studio that makes great games. They treat their employees right, and it really shows in how happy everyone is to come to work everyday.

    Kontras

They are a smallish studio, and they keep it that way by hiring the "extra" people on contract. This also means no vacation, benefits or sick days for those on contract. It's hard to get fulltime work here, which is too bad.
