Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

I work with some of the most brilliant people in the world. It is a culturally diverse community of people working towards a common goal.

    Kontras

It usually takes longer than it should to get things done because of the bureaucracy. There are more meetings than necessary.

    Rat an das Management

Continue to form cross-functional teams between business and IT and trust them to get the job done.

    Stimmt gegen Geschäftsführer

Ich habe für mehr als 10 Jahre bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Benefits were good. JPL used to be the best overall. It had leaders who had attainable and long range goals . It had managers who really know what was going on under their wings since they already had "hand-on experiences" and walked around to talk to their subordinates on the weekly basic.

    Kontras

Now, it becomes just like any other big commercial entity with more paper pushers, more bean counters, more of anything but competent supervisors who really know their stuffs to actually train or mentor newcomers. They let go key technical people and thought the younger engineers (both staff and senior levels) to pick up and run, but reality sinks in, and some tasks are left unfinished. Who will train personnel to... do the unfinished tasks? Quick solutions: hiring back the same key technical people through outside JPL contracting houses. Legal? Yes. Ethical? No.

    Rat an das Management

Miracle can happen, or the fat level of management needs to trim down to only keep the real talented and know-how.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als einem Jahr bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Much of the work at JPL involves the intersection of science and engineering. JPLers work to advance human knowledge of Earth, the Solar System, and the Cosmos. Coworkers here are some of the brightest and most interesting people you will meet.

    Kontras

As with any organization, particularly a government funded one, JPL has a great deal of bureaucracy. The NASA budget is at the whim of Congress and the President, and there is typically more science to be done than there is money to fund. The result is that projects may be cancelled or delayed for years at a time before they come to fruition, if ever. At the end of the day, you still get to work on projects... that will land on Mars, orbit the earth, or fly by other worlds. Keeping that big picture in mind, makes it all worth it.

    Rat an das Management

JPL can have a very deep management structure that leaves employees out of the loop on issues or strategic direction.

    Keine Meinung zum Geschäftsführer

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Really smart people doing interesting work in space and earth science

    Kontras

At the mercy of NASA funding, which is currently decreasing in real dollars

    Rat an das Management

Need to get more realistic about space mission costs to avoid the costly overruns that give the Lab a black eye with the folks in Washington DC

Ich arbeite bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory ()

    Pros

Flexible work hours. Good benefits. Family Oriented. Telecommuting.

    Kontras

Some organizations have too many reviews. Technology development has been ignored recently and some very good people have been let go (it is the same for all NASA now). Budget uncertainty from year to year because of the political football that is NASA. Some managers have no business being managers because they can't delegate (this is true across NASA).

    Rat an das Management

Too many managers and too many reviews. Let us work and trust us to do our job and verify on a quarterly basis instead of monthly basis. Stand up for tech development at JPL when negotiating with NASA.
