    Pros

-Getting to work on some of the coolest projects -Start time flexibility (as long as you meet your 40/week) -Many jobs allow you to work from home -Work phone + Laptop + Desktop

    Kontras

-Depending on project you may feel burnt out -Not the best at keeping track of assuring each new engineer starts in a support role

    Rat an das Management

Group supervisors do not count as mentors for young engineers. Assure that each one will be paired with a senior engineer to guide them through JPL best design practices.

Ich arbeite seit weniger als einem Jahr bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory als Vollzeit

    Pros

I have been working at JPL for about 6 months and everyone that I have worked with thus far has been incredibly enthusiastic about their work.

    Kontras

JPL's primary focus is on flight projects (such as the Mars rovers and other large scale NASA missions) and secondarily on technology, innovation and research. Coming in with a background in research (I just got my PhD), this was definitely a shift in mentality.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 5 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Fun, interesting and exciting projects to work on. Majority of people working here are enjoyable to work with and helpful. Flexible working hours. 9/80 Working Schedule: 9 hours per day with every other Friday off for 3 day weekends. Personal choice of either using a PC or Mac. Everything required for an Engineer to fully complete a task is located on Site (Computer Clusters for Analysis, Machine Shop for... fabrication of hardware, Environmental Testing and qualification of hardware, etc.). Phaeton Program allows Early Career Hires to start working on a Flight Project immediately instead of waiting for the next Flagship project

    Kontras

Lower than average salary compared to Industry. Low raises. Adverse attitude towards new ideas and/or change. Little room for career growth. Systems to manage and store paperwork is poor; clunky and buggy interfaces, poor design which all equate to inefficient use of time by the user. PhDs appear to have more leverage on winning proposals and obtaining money to support their tasks versus ones who do not hold a PhD.

    Rat an das Management

Increase the amount of smaller projects to allow for more engineers to get flight experience. Increase the amount of projects in the Phaeton Program to allow new Engineers to rapidly gain experience working on Flight Projects. Increase incentives, raises, and promotions to entice Engineers to stay at JPL. Award individuals for high performance and acknowledge their significant accomplishments. At times, too much... red-tape to get things done. We need more doers and reduce the number of gatekeepers to make sure you are following all protocols and policies to accomplish a simple task. Treat all employees the same, regardless of their degree (no degree, bachelors, masters, or PhD).

Ich habe für mehr als 5 Jahre bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

    Feels like an academic environment...slow.

    Kontras

Extremely egotistical people work there. Company hiring and firing policies are pretty much illegal. The technology gap between JPL and outside industry is HUGE. They are so far behind outside industry it's embarrassing. They are running on reputation alone. No opportunity for advancement unless you are a "specific" race, color, and creed.

    Rat an das Management

Learn to manage. Terrible management style, no skills whatsoever when dealing with people, no creativity. Engineers can't make good managers...they just make good puppets for higher ups.

Ich habe für mehr als 8 Jahre bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory gearbeitet (Vollzeit)

    Pros

It's the only place you can go to do planetary robotics and probes. If you're wiling to put in the hours (50+/week) you can make major contributions to Mars missions. You'll always have new and cool work to do. Lots of variety. If you stay long enough, you'll get to do a lot of different stuff. R&D, flight support work, and lot of other stuff is available. It can be fun or not fun depending on the internal... customer (personality). You get to work with brilliant people, and really friendly people, and sometimes both at the same time. If you meet the right people, they'll help you learn all kinds of awesome stuff.

    Kontras

Overly burdensome bureaucratic process. Ask why it should take 5 weeks to get permission to buy a box of Legos for prototyping. Engineers often feel they aren't learning enough from Lab to go elsewhere, since a lot of the work is NASA and JPL specific process. In actuality, this is likely not true for most. Brilliant people don't always have good social skills or understanding of social norms. You will... spend a lot of time dealing with unnecessary drama and odd behavior. The Lab will give preference to genius over good behavior. So even if you report bad behavior, many senior people are often given a lot of leeway. Each division has a unique culture. Members of the hardware divisions, mechanical especially (35x), are socially very aggressive. You are constantly defending your work against verbally abusive (but very skilled) engineers. Design reviews aren't quite as bad as Klingon pain stick rituals, but mentally pretty close. Impostor syndrome (thinking you're too stupid to work here) runs rampant. Some people internalize it. Others need to push others down (bullying, malicious politicking) to make themselves feel better. Advancement is based on visibility. This leaves a big gap between those who are <15 years on Lab, and those above. It also makes for advancement via cliques and friendships (in-crowd vs. outsider issues).

Start teaching respect, and actively training staff to stop bullying, at all levels of personnel (including the top). Work culture is tearing apart what could be an amazingly sustainable company of brilliant people. Instead Lab trains up people who leave after a few years.
