Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Get to work with world experts in fields, just down the hall. One of a kind projects (go to Mars, Europa, etc.) Nice people and campus to work at

    Kontras

The space business is very conservative - you're not going to be using the latest and greatest components. The lab is a hybrid of academia and industry - some organizations are very "peer reviewed publication" centric, others are not. The space business is very process intensive, while academic research tends to be more ad-hoc, so there is a tension as ideas move from low TRL research to higher TRL... implementation and the required level of rigor jumps dramatically. Physical infrastructure and test equipment inventory is aging - an artifact of being a government facility.

    Rat an das Management

Figure a way to get funding for the transition up TRLs without having to be tied to a specific mission.

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Great benefits, flexible with personal life demands (time), very interesting work, ability to change focus of career to multiple areas. Offers unique intersection of Federally funded work, scientific academia, and engineering industry at one single location, without the drawbacks of being a civil servant government employee.

    Kontras

Very intellectually demanding, organizational hubris at times both internal and external to the Lab, sometimes long hours or long travel required to support projects, single salary cannot support buying a home in a decent public school district within a 30 minute commute from the lab.

    Rat an das Management

Offer better salaries commensurate with buying a home in La Canada, San Marino, Sierra Madre, or Arcadia on a single JPL Salary within 5-10 years of employment. Also, don't leverage JPL's reputation to justify pay and benefits that lag other sectors of the aerospace industry: e.g. "Where else can you do work like this?"

    Keine Meinung zum Geschäftsführer

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Get to work with some of the most brilliant minds in the world doing incredible work. Since we are part of Cal Tech there is opportunity for collaboration with they university faculty and staff. There is ample opportunity for technical and professional growth. The 9/80 work week is a blessing for those allowed to use it. Unfortunately it can be taken away by capricious management.

    Kontras

JPL is a huge bureaucracy where people get things done despite the system. The bureaucratic nature of the system eats up a large portion of the laboratory budget and results in a lot of the equipment and facilities being out dated. Managers tend to embody the Peter Principle having risen to their level of incompetence.

    Rat an das Management

People know they could make more more on the outside and many good employees have been lost because of this.

„Fun and diverse, but large government employer”

Ich arbeite seit mehr als 10 Jahren bei NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Vollzeit)

    Pros

Work on one of a kind projects (robots go to Mars or other planets) Interact with world experts Casual work environment Good cafeterias

    Kontras

Space business is conservative, so there's a gap between cutting edge new developments and what people are willing to launch into space where you can't fix it. Many year project life cycle for spacecraft means that institutional processes are not very nimble. Nobody ever leaves, so not much room for promotions.

    Rat an das Management

HR/Senior Management should be more realistic about path to promotions; de-facto minimum time between promotions, wage stagnation, etc. This is true of all large companies, but we're smart people, we can figure out what's going on, but clarity is better than rumor and speculation.
