    Pros

    Work from home

    Kontras

Teacher Assistants that don't speak English well enough to provide efficient assistance for teachers. I worked there for 5 months and didn't get paid a single time. My TA was trying to figure out the reason behind the transaction problem for months all in vain. Her messages on the matter were nothing but confusing.

She ended up texting me "just wait and be patient and Likeshuo will pay you one day". I went in a group chat and asked if it's possible to change a TA (literally this question without mentioning any names or blaming anyone whatsoever) and got blocked instantly.

Then the TA wrote to me "How dare you. I do my best to help you!"
(oh, did I mention that when you try to figure something out, they sometimes speak to you as if you were a worthless piece of we all know what?)

So she went on playing a victim trying to make me look like a monster for no reason. As mentioned above, I never wrote anything negative apart from asking one harmless question in the group chat.

So right now I'm blocked from the website and I can't even delete my own data (pictures, passport info etc).

    Rat an das Management

Make sure that your teacher assistants fully understand how the company works and are capable of dealing with financial issues. Educate them on how to be polite in their correspondence with teachers and ask for help if they fail to resolve a problem.
It appears that they are too afraid to spoil an image of a good employee and turn to a senior manager for assistance.

    Pros

    Very few pros.
Visa process was badly communicated. My friend and I applied together. My friend is Caucasian and was offered a higher salary. I have higher education and more experience and was offered a lower salary and a position in an obscure location. I have nothing good to say.

    Kontras

Racism. Unclear about the visa application process. Poor communication. Very poorly managed. Incompetent management & support staff.

    Wake up - it's 2019 - not 1819.

Ich arbeite in Vollzeit bei METEN English (mehr als ein Jahr)

    Pros

I was going to give 2 stars because the students are always great, but your can't rate a company on its customers.

My colleagues are great and a joy to work with... But can that be attributed to Meten either?

The National Geographic books they've started using, along with a teaching system that reduces teacher talk time, makes the job relatively easy...But, other than that, every thing I like about this job comes from factors that have absolutely nothing to do with the company itself.

An exception to that, however, would be the incompetence of the HTs (managers of the teaching department). Thank God for them, because due to their incompetence, I'm able to get through the day with relative flexibility and freedom.

Their incompetence is a double-edged sword though, which I'll elaborate on in the cons section.

There's nothing else to say about pros here.

    Kontras

Greed, reflected in their organisational structure and policies. If you make a mistake, don't expect support and encouragement, expect a financial penalty. Every one of their policies exists to steal back money from staff to cover expenses in other areas of the business.

Complete lack of value in staff, leading to high staff turnover. They cancelled the Christmas party this year due to a dip in profits; profits they wouldn't have had without the staff.

Short-sighted profit-seeking policies lending from their utter lack of value placed in staff and students. The centre I'm working at has sold customers 3 or 4 levels worth of classes, which it can't provide them because there are never enough classes for the students to book. Despite their inability to cater for the customers it has already conned, their primary focus is still on getting more customers in for short-term gain. I'm just sorry I won't be here to see the business fail when this dip in sales from a lack of re-signs sends the company back into failure.

A bewildered management. Training sessions arranged to try to claw at a professional appearance, despite 80% of the audience likely on their way out of the door because of other issues mentioned; good quality teaching ignored while criticism for not pushing chairs in is given without delay; a brick wall policy on customer feedback whereby their requests for improvement via us foreign teachers is utterly ignored when fed back to a HT (probably because their hands are tied, but still...)

If it's your first time in China and you're looking for a relatively easy gig, you're not principled and don't let unethical employers get your down, this company might be an option for your first year. But I'd look elsewhere. Even offering services to this horrible company is unethical and I feel guilty every day.

    Rat an das Management

The management don't want my advice. They've re-branded the business already due to previous failures and simply see the business as a cash cow.

    Pros

They will hire you with no experience and pay for a TEFL certificate for you.
    Okay pay.
Ask for 16000 rmb per month before tax if they quote you less than that.

    Kontras

The management is pretty incompetent, the amount of support and respect you will get differ massively depending on the center you work for.
Very little to no room for promotion.
You will be under constant scrutiny, lesson observations etc.
Management will listen to your opinions/complaints and then ignore them.
Management might do things that are illegal like try to give you a longer length of probation than is allowed by the government, or withhold/ slander you in a letter of reccomendation making it difficult to get another job. again it depends on which exact manager you deal with.
The management is pretty greedy, they will mislead students and care much more about the money than anything else.
You might be paid less than your coworkers who do the exact same job with same experience unless you negotiate a good starting salary (i would suggest asking for 16,000 rmb per month as long as you are native english)
Very fast turnover rate due to management and pay

    Rat an das Management

Actually listen to your employees opinions
Don't just use your employees as tools to make money for you
If you pay better people will stay with the company longer

    Pros

You can make your own schedule and there is no pressure from TAs in this regard. The courseware is generally good and the platform is also easy to use. Students are also generally very nice, though this has nothing to do with the company itself.

    Kontras

As students look for teachers and book them, you are not guaranteed a set number of classes. In my first few months I was only teaching 10-20 classes at 100 yuan per class, so start of and work your way to getting regular students before you can reliably earn a secure income.

TAs are great if you have a problem with the system or something that affects the client. However, they can often be overworked and so if you have a complaint about anything, it often goes unheard.
